Flywheel removal
« on: January 01, 2011, 08:07:00 AM »
I'm pulling apart a L134 that has been sitting for 15 plus years.  The bell housing was half full of damp mouse nest. Four of the clutch bolts came right out but the 2 on the bottom were very rusted and had to be cut. Once the clutch was off, the six flywheel bolts came out easy but the flywheel does not budge. The pilot bushing is worn paper thin and does not seem to be whats holding it. Anyone have any sugestions? Wedges, pry bars, big hammer? This engine also rolls over about 180' the pistons move but some valves must be stuck. :-?

Put a couple of the flywheel bolts back in loosely and give it a good shot with a large hammer using a block of wood as an isolator so you don't damage the flywheel. It should break loose and the bolts will keep it from falling on the ground.

They are suppost to be that tight.  What I did was I used a long screwdriver and reached behind the flywheel right where it was against the crank shaft.  Placing it there I taped it then moved it to the side again I taped it.  I did this repeatedly around the crank.  Each time it would move the flywheel a very little, almost not to notice.  After going around a few times it came off.  The bolts press it back on when you tighten them up, so remember to tighten the bolts little by little, do not try to tighten a bolt all the way down on the first try rotate.

Flywheel off. Got it moving with a hammer and block and finished with a prybar.
Thanks for tips.
