As I was assembling the carb and got to the choke assy I saw the choke shaft was badly worn so I made a new one. It was a heck of a lot easier to make than the throttle shaft was.

Then I finished assembling everything and tried to make the choke work better than it does. Both the carb on the Jeep and the one I built have the same issue, the choke will not open the throttle as the choke plate closes. The design of the choke on the WO carb is very poor. I spent about an hour or two trying several tricks to make the choke pull the throttle open as the choke closes and there is no way to do it.
Before I put the rebuilt carb on I will study how I can redesign the linkage to make it work like it should. It's not like I have to put it on the Jeep right away so I will spend a few days thinking about it. Then again, maybe not. �:

Anyway, here is the rebuilt carb.

Setting the metering rod was not as hard as I had thought, but then, with as much trouble as others have had it remains to be seen if my adjustment works. What I did was to back off the throttle plate idle screw so the plates were completely closed. I had already set the accelerator pump. Then assembled the metering rod and top cover and put the cover on. Then I loosened the nut on the pin and moved the pin down until it was just touching the metering rod with no slop and tightened the nut. I checked to see if it still had less than the .005" movement, which means you can still move the metering rod but it's not forced down in the jet. Then I put the spring in the hole, put the choke horn assy on and assembled the linkages.
The military manual was very straight forward about the final setting after using the presetting tool which I don't have. I saw no need for the tool since the manual tells you how the needle is supposed to be after using the tool. We'll see how that goes.
