Vac wiper motor mount hole spacing (windshield)?
« on: April 18, 2019, 03:55:57 PM »
Hi folks,
I'm messing with a vacuum wiper setup. I got two vacuum wiper "motors", but I'm pretty sure they're not the right 616 type. Knowing this, I welded up the mounting holes on either side of the thru shaft hole in the windshield thinking that I'd just go completely custom. But now I'd rather just make a mount to fit the original type of hole spacing. So I need to drill holes.
Can anyone tell me what the spacing is for the mounting holes for the factory wiper motor? Is it the same on the passenger side?

I have two Trico "motors" (picked up at a swap meet) and one is marked L and one is marked R, but how and/or where do I find what model they are? Was the model number only inked?

I will be making my own bar mount adapters to fit these motors, but again I'd like to try to make them work with original spacing windshield thru holes.

Thankyou!
Dave Miles

Dave,
Here's an image I found of mine (I was documenting the shaft length).  Is the mounting style similar to what you're talking about?

This is on my '54 3B.

Yes, your picture shows the two screws that go through the outside of the windshield into the adapter mount (strap).
Do you have the spacing?
And are those 10-32 screws?

Thankyou

Dave,
I measured 3 5/8" between the two screws and it's centered so 1 13/16" each side from the shaft hole center.

From the Parts Manual I see the screws are:
Screw and lockwasher, rd. hd. No. 10-32 x 7/8".........2

Again, this is on a 3B. If someone can confirm these measurements it would make me feel better....

Added:  After thinking on this, I should mention that if it were me, I'd remove that bracket from the wiper motor and hold it flush against the windshield frame (where the shaft hole is lined up-possibly use a spare bolt for alignment) and then you can easily mark the necessary holes prior to drilling.

Not sure what specific wiper motors squidtone is using  but Yes the parts are all "essentially" using the same dimensions with all universal type jeeps regardless of specific Jeep model.

Thanks guys. And thanks Rus for the measurement.
I don't have an original vacuum motor bracket in order to drill new holes. My original was missing and I unwisely welded up the original holes in the windshield. I found new motors (pictured) at a swap meet...I think I paid 5 bucks for the pair. But I'm thinking they're bigger than original 616 versions. The pair I picked up seem to be LH and RH as evidenced by those letters on the little covers on top.

I'm wondering now, also, where CJ3A's parked their wipers....were they both to the same side? Drivers or Passenger side?

Regardless, I intend to fit these to the Jeep by making new bars for adapting to the windshield.
The motors themselves have a spacing of 4-11/16 between screw holes.

I'll post again when I get something going. I made up new vacuum hard lines for the engine, and I'm also currently figuring out the hardline that is screwed to the windshield (good pictures from Stony's project post last year are a big help)

This is my original.  It mounts to a bracket that mounts to the windshield.  It is out in the garage, I dig it out in the meantime:

Here is the bracket, with tube for the shaft through the windshield:
Looks like the vac motor holes are 4 11/16, windshield holes, 3 5/8.

From the factory a CJ-3A only had a vacuum wiper on the drivers side. The optional passenger vacuum wiper kit included a different motor that parked on the opposite side as the driver's motor.

Excellent!  Using that to mark before drilling will help and then you only have to ensure it's level.

But, let me point out - the outside holes, 4 11/16", are bracket-to-motor mounts (reference my pic and your original) and the inside holes, 3 5/8", are bracket to w/s tube.

To piggyback on Bob's post,  I think the park for the wiper arm should be to the center.  The driver's wiper to the right and the optional passenger's wiper to the left.  Hopefully, when you power up those donor wiper motors they have opposite parking spots to allow you to copy the originals.

FWIW, I posted on the 3B BB about a seller on ebay was offering NOS wiper arms.  I don't know if he still has any.

You are right, it was late, outside holes were for the motor, inside for windshield, I corrected it.  Thanks!

Thanks folks!
As for wiper arms, I bought an arm from Walcks, (their $8.35 ones) but the post mount won't work with my mystery motors.
I then purchased an OMIX ADA 19102.01 arm and this seems like it will work great because I can modify the post mount; it has a "C" clamp that grips around the wiper post...my posts are larger OD but I can simply drill out the "C" part of the wiper to slip fit over my wiper shafts and tighten the screw to clamp it.

Hope it works!

Will also need to check clearance when you lower w/s so wiper arm doesn't contact hood.  Initially I had similar arm that fit OVER the shaft vs. on shaft then nut.  I had to shim with washers to offset wiper motor further back into jeep - making shaft a bit shorter (see above image with extra washers).

There is a correct one on eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/Willys-Jeep-Trico-Vacuum-Wiper-Motor/401729671216?epid=1033662397&hash=item5d88f45030:g:mUoAAOSwYNRciwQ1 unfortunately a little expensive.  Try contacting Midwest Willys, they might have one for a lot less.
