Southern Utah: Act VI
« on: August 18, 2013, 12:39:07 AM »
Getting ready to head out on another trail. We were planning on another mountain ride, but the weather looked too threatening to go into the mountains today.

So we headed into the lower terrain to the south.

This trail has some rough spots.

Yep, there's my Jeepin' smile again.

My wife always like to take a rock or two home from each trail ride. I told here this one was too big.

Mac wanted to see how we'd added a Jeep shroud to an aluminum radiator in Carl's Jeep. Sorry I'm blocking the view in this photo. I know Carl has a pic or two. He may add them here or start a new topic.

Gray skies but still no rain yet.

As I've said in earlier posts this summer, usually such creeks have water in them, but not this summer.

Fun trail. Ups and downs, ins and outs. A little tipping too, but no real danger on this trail.

Rest stop for lunch. No tables. Just have to make do. I prefer it that way, however. If a government agency has provided tables, that means entry fees, lots of people, and the feel of nature is long gone.

Well, we finally got it--a one-inch desert rain storm. That means the drops covering the area were one inch apart. Usually we just get a six-inch rain storm.

Another, "into the wash and back out".

Came to a fork in the trail. Carl want's to know which way.

This new trail had a steep and loose entry and exit into and out of a wash that we had not been to before. Carl decided to give it a try while I looked on.

Since he made it I had to give it a try.

Now to get buck up out of there. Challenging and fun. Had it been too steep we knew Carl's winch would have come to the rescue.

There's the state road ahead. Six more miles and were back home.

That was Lower Recapture and the fork in the road was one Calvin had not noticed before because we took the trail backwards to what we usually did. The banks on the last wash was about 45 deg and the Jeeps just rambled right up and down them like the mountain goat they are.

On an airplane flight we had found some dugways they had not been on and I was watching for any trail that was hard to find or new and I saw several.

In the three years I have come to Utah I have gained a lot of respect for what these Jeeps can do and we haven't pushed them to their limits yet. Our Jeeps set up stock with army tires do have limits but the limit is very high.

It's no longer a mystery to me how the Jeep had a BIG hand in winning the war and why the GI's loved the jeep.
