Aug 20 field trip
« on: August 20, 2013, 11:39:32 PM »
Today Mac and I went on a ride mostly on San Juan County roads to exotic places. Well, I guess exotic is a stretch but it was fun. We drove about 125 miles visiting The Bears Ears peaks and then to the Woodenshoe Butte. The photo is The Bears Ear sign where we celebrated the event with a beer for the bears. We left Blanding about 10 AM and didn't get home until about 4 PM. We forgot to take a lunch so the beer was our lunch.

Here's a photo of The Bears Ears from a street in Blanding. I like to call it "Bear Sleeping on Mountain". You can see his head on the left, his large tummy in the center and his legs stretched out on the right.

We traveled home on hwy 95 and on the way we stopped at Arch Canyon to travel down that trail to see if it was still in good condition and it is. We only went in as far as just past where I got stuck three years ago. We plan to take that trail this year if the rains don't keep us out again.

We stopped at the airport to visit Calvin and friends and to analyze an issue that suddenly showed up on Mac's Jeep. The jury is still out on what is going on with the noise we heard.

Looks like good fun Carl.
Out of curiosity, do you have to take along extra fuel for these outings?

I hope Mac's Jeep ailment isnt serious.

I carry a 5 gal military Jerry can in the Jeep with a spare tire in the Jeep and a tool kit. As it turned out yesterday I started with less than a full tank. When I got to Blanding it took 8.6 gal. to fill the tank to just the bottom of the filler spout. I never do fill the tank all the way to the top because it just spills out on the trails. It still spills out when the Jeep is tilted over.

The noise stopped in Mac's Jeep but we intend to do some more inspection with a digital inspection camera.

We've never stayed out over night (wimps, I guess), but on our longest day-long trips I have never carried nor needed any extra gas. Last year on one trip I was glad Carl had an extra 5 gallons. I was hoping he would share if needed. But we didn't need it.

Looking forward to the day you can join us.

The digital inspection camera Carl mentioned above is a borescope. We use it regularly to inspect turbine aircraft engines as well as other aircraft structural parts (we do cheap colonoscopies on the side).
