Rear end progress

Finally got some time to reassemble the rear end. This has been a long, drawn out effort mostly due to not having time to work on it. With 2 boys aged 10 & 11, my wife says "This project is 10 years too early for you...."

Anyway, the new back end has a new shackle bracket on the passenger rear - the old one was rusted thru - new leaf springs, new shackles, new shocks, new brake shoes, springs, brake cylinders, cleaned out the differential and cleaned up the dirt/rust and painted.

Now don't go and tell me my brake lines are all wrong �:P ....it's what was around and serving to keep dirt out of the cylinders.

Nice to see it back on all four wheels, tho....I might just have something when I'm done.

Actually if you get the boys involved it couldn't be at a better time, in my opinion.

Looks great so far, and I will not say anything about brake lines.

I agree...although they're not quite there yet. I think when I get to putting the body back on and it looks more like a jeep, they'll be all over it.

Just finished my rearend rebuilding project. Other then the tub, nothing takes more rust and corrosion abuse then the rear end. Gears and axle's were ok but everything else needed to be rebuilt or replaced.

BMIC - mine were also covered with grease/dirt/grime. Like you, I cleaned the brake plate and essentially replaced everything else. I'm hoping the new oil seals will prevent (or at least slow down) the accumulation of grease/gunk on the shoes.

I also have to put a new rear bumper and ball hitch support. You can see in the one picture where I had to cut part of the support off.....rusted too much to save...much like the body itself.
