BODY and trim / Re: M38 Canvas Top On A CJ3A
« on: March 25, 2024, 11:47:57 PM »
These are M38 top bows.  The yellow Jeep has 3A bows.  I have never tried the M38 top on the 3A bows.  Although the demensions are similar between the M38 and the CJ3A, securing an M38 top on a CJ3A with 3A bows comes with complications.

This may not look like it, but it is a 3A with an M38 top.  What set of top bows do you have?

I have a CJ3A sector shaft that I purchased several years ago from a local supplier.  It does not match either length that you have listed.  6-1/16"

Here is page 23 of one of my CJ3A builds.  This shows a simple approach to keeping an original 3A look with added turn signals.  (You can see a photo of the finished grill on page 25.)  I used a Walck's wire harness and a standard turn signal switch that most of the Willys vendors sell.

Just a heads up...

A four essentric brake system as shown in your photo is suppose to have the long brake shoe toward the front of the Willys.  Yours appears to be set up opposite of this rule. ;)

Just one comment based on your plan...

There is no value to the sealed bearing if you leave the drain hole open.

Make sure you have a good ground on the voltage regulator.

In my view, the reproduction tub does drop the value a bit, but there is a lot to like under the hood.

The tub is an older reproduction.  The sure tell sign is the combination of M38 and CJ3A features.

That said, it looks like a very nice Willys.  Got any photos of the engine bay?

Just an FYI...

Brent Mullins Jeep Parts is a legitimate business.  Brent has been around for years.  He has a good reputation in the Willys universe.

Looks like a CJ3B/early CJ5 bell housing.  This is mine.

The driver side seat frame appears to be from an M38.

Your fuel line and filter are very close to your exhaust manifold/exhaust pipe. The heat can cause vapor lock.  Consider moving your line and filter as far away from the exhaust manifold/pipe as you can.

The indent goes away during CJ3A production.  The radiator rod support (the primary reason for the indent) was no longer needed when the radiator switched from bottom mount to side mount on the CJ3A.
