1948 Willys CJ2A Jeep. $2200. Sincere, old Montana jeep, mostly rust-free body, some bondo. No motor. Title (Helena, 1971); title says 1949 but I was informed the serial number is 1948 production. Unique, custom, well-built, steel full cab, therefore no original windshield frame or tailgate. Floors minor rust-out, bed very solid and straight, toolbox replaced. Original radiator and toolbox lid included. 16” rims, tires have air but need replaced. Email me for more pix, questions: skloetzel@tnc.org or 406-214-2036

After much consideration, feedback, research...i finally bought a Universal UN2 Carb direct from the US supplier/importer: Daytona ($299+$20 for aircleaner +$25 s&h).

Installed the shiny thang a week ago. Pretty easy to install, very minimal modification required.  All i had time to do was roughly adjust it by ear (the instructions are to adjust lo/hi jets at 500rpm then 2000rpm w/ a tach, which i don't have).  Then i took off snowplowing for 2+ hours.  All seems fine, tho' i had to re-set where the fuel filter sits, as it was vapor-locking (i think) when fuel got too hot from filter sitting on the block btwn the heater hose and valve cover gasket (duh!) (remember i have an F-head).

So Clem runs better already.  (Hopefully as good as a YF938 would!)  I will keep y'all posted.  Will start a new thread, once i get it properly adjusted to spec, to report on performance.

If it doesn't work out, i will swap it for the good olde 938...  Anyone wanna buy a yf964??

I have '50 CJ3A with a F-head.  It came with the F-head, no idea of year of the motor (#648830).  And came with the YF964S.  I do not know how well it ever ran with that setup (was barely running when i bot it 3y ago).
I just ordered a fuel pressure regulator/reducer, to try to tamp down the P (yes, it also came with an electric fuel pump...that is another issue).  That is my last try...then i sell that 964 to a Stovebolter, and maybe try the Daytona Universal UN2, PLUS a mechanical pump.  I found them for $299 from the Daytona supplier directly, plus $20 for the air filter.  Alas, they are now made in Taiwan...only marginally better than China...but there are rebuild kits available.
I have read plenty bad reviews of the Solex carbs...but none for this Universal.

So, noone on here has tried one of these?!?  Daytona Universal UN2.  I guess they've made/used them in South America since the 50's.

I read a chat on a Stovebolt Forum, it was fairly positive.  That is, unless if one is a complete Carb Wizard.  Neither me nor my jeep "Clem" are wizards ...we just needs something that works better than this #$%&@# YF964s that is came with..  Too much carb, runs always too rich, floods the motor under load, etc.

Engine compartment / Oil breather and intake manifold connections
« on: January 19, 2021, 08:22:00 PM »
Hiya!  Can anyone tell me how these things should be plumbed?  I can't seem to find agreement in pictures/manuals where to hook these up.  As you can see:
  - the intake manifold port is plugged
  - the cap or breather on of the top valve cover is plugged (did a PCV valve go here, or a filler cap?)
-the breather port on the oil-fill tube is wide open...

This F-Head motor is #648830, if that helps.  No idea of year of motor.  thanks for any advice!

Hi Steve W,
Do you have any more info on the Ford Falcon carb that would work?  Make/model #? I am still struggling with the Carter YF 964, and getting this thang to run right...still major power problems.  Some folks are saying 964's are not for F-Heads, but were for Stovebolts.  ie 'too much carb'.

'tho right now i am rewiring nearly the whole critter, due to a big short while wiring in wipers, that fused a bunch of wires together.  It was a scary 70 yr old web under there!

Anyone have any tips what this was for?  a horn relay?

thanks scoutpilot.  That is good to know.  I have read that some CJ3B's (F-heads) had YF964S's installed at assembly in-plant.  But perhaps that is not correct.

I will look at acquiring a YF938 (rebuilt, or one to rebuild), or perhaps the "Universal" replacement carb that both Jeepsterman and Kaiser-Willys sell.

Any thoughts on that Universal carb?  Here's the link to it on K-W:

I see that Kaiser-Willys has same carb, for $330:    https://www.kaiserwillys.com/new-fully-universal-carburetor-fits-50-71-willys-jeep-with-4-134-f-engine

There's some limited Q & A on there too.  I too would like to know if anyone has experience with this replacement!

The F-Head motor (in my CJ3A) has a Carter YF 964S...which i am struggling with somewhat.  I have read that Solex's aren't wonderful.

« on: January 01, 2021, 10:02:21 PM »
Thanks Rus.  I did set it a "parallel with top" first, installed...and it flooded out the bottom.  There were also other issues with my rebuild of the YF 964S.  So took it back off, took out most of the new parts i put in from the 2 carb rebuild kits i bought (Kaiser-Willys and Mike's Carbs, which seems to tuned to YF 938's) and put back in the old jets, etc.  Reset the float to closer 5/16", and now it seems to be working ok.

Where did you find info on settings for a 964S?  Seems like they were not used on may CJ3Bs, mostly used 938's?  Used on alot of Chevy Stovebolts, sounds like.

Unfortunately i am still having poor power issues, sputtering etc when accelerating.  Will check timing tomorrow and replace the condenser and points.  Then i'm gunna be outta ideas.

I am rebuilding the Carter YF now.  Already modified the air filter and hood bump to be as small as possible, here's what it used to look like (was a galvy chain guard from some farm machinery, full length of hood!)
If i can't get the Carter to work, i'll look into carb conversions.   Would be nice to be able to put my front window down for sure.

Engine compartment / Carter YF 964S Adjustment questions
« on: December 23, 2020, 08:23:55 PM »
Howdy, Jeep Wizards!
I have a '50 CJ3A with a F-head (#648830).  Is there any way to find out the year of this motor?

And, to the point of this Topic: I am rebuilding the carb, it's a YF 964S.  I bought 'master rebuild kits' from both Kaiser-Willys and Mike's, as neither seemed to have all of the correct replacement parts for my carb.

i THINK i am ready to fully reassemble it, but need to adjust the Float open and closed settings.  For closed settings, i have read 5/16", 1/4" and 'parallel with the flat of the top housing (when inverted).  Anyone know which it is?

For open (max drop) setting, i have seen 1 1/4" for 'Early Type' and 1 5/8" for 'Late Type'.  but how the heck do i know which 'Type' i have?

Lastly, i guess i need to check the metering rod adjustment too...still confused about how to do that.

thanks for any advice!  -SK

Hello All,
Joined this Community 3 yrs ago, but finally have something to write about: Progress!  Three yrs ago I bot a '50 CJ3A (S#47056) on Craigslist - it had been sitting in a Laramie, Wyo cow-pasture for ~20yrs.  Has a later-model F-head (S#648830) and a Western snowplow (6'6", model #23777).  Was barely running when i bot it, and very soon died...then got parked (finally in a shed - poor old thing).

Finally had time this fall to wrench a bit, and it is now running ok - still have issues with engine sputtering at higher speeds or under load.  Today I messed with a few ideas, now trying to figure out which Carter YF it has, so i can rebuild the thang...hoping that will solve the problem.  I need it running well ASAP so it can plow my 1/8mi long driveway - luckily we've had very little snow so far this winter.

I'm not new to Willys, have had several since 1984 when i bot my first car, a '63 Wagon.  Later, a '51 pickup, '56 wagon, finally a '51 CJ3A that i never could get running correctly.  Being without a Willys for 17years was not an acceptable experience!

Have had fun redoing the seats, rewiring, adding wipers, spare tire mount, R&R'ing various other needs.   A bunch of issues to still work on: re-changing all fluids, rebuilding the Harrison heater, finding/adding a Half Cab and a Bed Extender...

Cheers!  -Steve
