Gearboxes and axles / Re: Original

Rus & Others: This is in reply to reply # 9:
The hour meter replaces the original fuel gauge, since the relocated fuel tank takes a different type sending unit.
The siren switch was on it when I acquired the Jeep. Therefore, I assume at one time it must have had an electric siren, but absent when I acquired it.It did come with a hand crank siren on the right rear light post, which is now on an engine in Florida that needed one. It now has an electric siren again.
My entire Jeep can be seen on: Do a google search for fire jeeps in Minnesota, go to Fire Jeeps on cj3b.info, Fire Service Jeeps, go to fire jeeps in Minnesota,go to mystery jeep which will be the firest one shown. There may be a less involved way to access this, but if so I can't find it.
Serial number plate, left frame horn: Plate missing  nor number stamped in frame.
Motor serial number: 2T16505 which is a pickup truck motor not original to my CJ 80" chassis.
This vehicle was assembled by a one-armed mechanic in middle Minnesota prior to 1960, with his niece providing the extra arm when needed. So, no wonder it was advertised as a 'mystery Jeep' and for sure is a one-of-one.

Hopefully, a better picture of the 'mystery' instruments panel. 1. Choke. 2. Temp. 3.  Siren Relay  4. Dashboard light  5. Push rod for Starter
6. Amps  7.Hour Meter (replacing Fuel Gauge)  8.Handbrake pull rod  9.Speedometer/odometer  10.Oil Pressure  11.Key switch.

Fuel gauge relocated due to relocated fuel tank & different type sending unit.

New flat disc freeze plug installed with Permatax #3 (old & very thick) used as a sealant. Everything seemed to go right. Will wait a few days before adding coolant. With a 4pound radiator cap there shouldn't be enough pressure to cause it to pop out.

A correction to reply #4: My error on which body panels are original Jeep. The dashboard and the top & side panel one piece assembly between the hood and door openings seems to be original Jeep. There were several unused small holes in the dashboard which have been filled-in and not showing in the photo. I have numbered each of the items showing in the photo: most are obvious , but #3 is a switch for the siren relay and #5 is the push/pull rod for the starter.

Rus: Yes, I have watched some of those how-to videos. The go-divil uses a slightly convex flat plug rather than a shallow cup plug as shown in the videos. I have ordered a set of the flat plugs and if no instructions are included I will trying to call the vendor for installation procedures. I do have one of the Dorman rubber expansion plugs if all else fails, but I question how long one of those might last. I only have the right side rear plug to replace in a rebuilt motor already installed. I ddn't discover its failure until I started to put antifreeze in it. Somehow/somewhere/sometime it had been hit with an abrasive disc/wheel that reduced the center point of the disc enouth to leak but not show when painted over. Reminds me of an unfortunate Jeep adage, "if it doesn't leak, it isn't a Jeep". I'm trying for just an occasional drip of something; not enough for epa to cause a problem.

Might the 4 instrument gauges above the speedomerer layout be from Jeep Trucks or Sta.Wagons? Other things on the dashboard, parking brake rod/handle, starter push rod w/ball, choke knob, key switch all seem to be in their CJ expected places. It was advertised as a mystery Jeep when I bought it,so maybe this is part of the mystery. The motor in it is a mid 1948 2T truck motor, but the frame is 80 inch w/b. The only Jeep body parts on it are the steering column/wheel and headlight buckets. All the body panels are custom fabrications, although the front grille panel is a factory stamping repurposed from something, again another mystery. A 1of1.

I need to replace a flat disc type freeze plug in a go-devil L Head motor. ANY suggestions on installing the new disc will be greatly appreciated.

Dashboard: Attached is a photo of the dashboard (instruments panel) on my 'mystery" Jeep. What Jeep models/years used this layout where the four gauges are above the speedometer instead of surrounding it?
Sorry, no photo. I have it saved where I can put it as an attachment to an email, but do not know how to include it in a posting here. How do I do that?

Gearboxes and axles / Re: Tranny and Tr.Case oil levels
« on: October 06, 2025, 09:42:44 PM »
Ron: Many thanks for your write-up on this. I've filled both, first Tr.Case and then Tranns, both up to overflow level on the respective filler plugs. Tr.Case at 55 oz. and Tranny 40oz.Thats just an ounce short of 6 pints total.
I've lost my notes on how to place a new forum question:give me the steps to follow to do this, please.

On a late 1949 CJ3A with 3 spd. tranny , how much G-4 oil is needed for each the Tranny and Tr.Case,  which have individual filler and drain plugs? These cases are reconditioned units, completely empty.

EVERYTHING ELSE, General tips / Mystery Wheel
« on: February 20, 2022, 09:07:11 PM »
My '49 CJ3A came with one non-standard wheel: 16"x4" (yes, 4", not 4-1/2) 5 bolt 5-1/2 bolt circle but with only a 3-3/8" center hole. The center hole was too small for it to be on the front.  It has four internal "bumps" for hubcap retention. The wheel manufacturers logo stamped on the inner surface next to the tube stem hole is a circle with an A in the center, an 8 under the A, and a reversed P to the left of the A, and another P to the right of the A. I will attempt to put a drawing of this as an attachment to this.  Question: Did Willys ever use a 4" wheel, or if not, who did?  I can find nothing in my Hollanders manuals to answer this.

EVERYTHING ELSE, General tips / Caster-Camber guage
« on: December 12, 2021, 03:49:04 PM »
Re: John Bean Dial-O-Matic model 130 Caster-Camber gauge from the 1970's is what I need the instructions for. This is a hand-held tool, with the instructions on a foil label that is now illegible. A photo of a readable label or a print out of whatever instructions originally came with it would be very helpful. John Bean Co has no records in their files. Thank you

Thanks, Oldtime. Carl Walck had a NOS 926816 yoke at a reasonable price. Needs only a 3/8" spacer (which I made on my lathe) between the yoke and the pinion washer & nut.  Will put in a new seal also, when the weather is more cooperative. My Pennsylvania garage is unheated, so will work on items that can be carried into my heated workshop, until warmer days.

My CJ3A is a 1949 that I am restoring, with good title, but I do not have any 'extra" title. I am in western Pennsylvaia. Still looking for the A1674 distributor clamp.

Buy, Sell, Trade / A1674 Distributor bracket
« on: November 13, 2019, 01:37:04 PM »
For a IAD4008 distributor, I need the clamp style bracket  that has one bolt into the motor block and a second bolt that clamps the bracket around the distributor body where it slides into the block. Willys part # A1674. Willy called it an 'advance arm' (used to lock the distributor rotation after setting the dwell). I have also heard it referred to as the distributor mounting bracket. It apparently was used on other auto-lite Wllys distributors too.  Anyone have one needing a CJ3A to call home?  Thank you
