EVERYTHING ELSE, General tips / Re: How is it pronounced??
« on: August 31, 2016, 11:04:01 PM »
Hi John.  That was an awesome tip and I searched and found this: https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=willys+jeep+commercial&view=detail&mid=84496C0E9FB9DE4E143C84496C0E9FB9DE4E143C&FORM=VIRE

(tried to embed the link but got an error message, sorry)

This was dated 1950 and throughout it the narrator calls it a Willies  :o

Now as an engineer I am never content with the first piece of evidence... found this non-Jeep commercial from 1954
https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=willys+jeep+commercial&view=detail&mid=21AD83F993E43772FD2D21AD83F993E43772FD2D&FORM=VIRE  and she definitely calls it a Willis  :-/

This one did not name it but still interesting to watch  ;)
https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=willys+jeep+commercial&&view=detail&mid=12AB553C0B238F403C5512AB553C0B238F403C55&rvsmid=D9A728983CD8965C481DD9A728983CD8965C481D&fsscr=0&FORM=VDQVAP

Another commercial... under the Kaiser umbrella... calls it a Willis
https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=willys+jeep+commercial&&view=detail&mid=47EFFE0E58C3E4929D2B47EFFE0E58C3E4929D2B&FORM=VRDGAR

And another one calling it a Willies
https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=willys+jeep+commercial&&view=detail&mid=EDE401B6943DD6713171EDE401B6943DD6713171&FORM=VRDGAR  Not so sure about filling the back of the Jeep up with corn though  ;D

https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=willys+jeep+commercial&&view=detail&mid=33304123A21E52BF835133304123A21E52BF8351&FORM=VRDGAR  Jeep-a-Trench  ;D but he does come out and calls it a Willis

Just a classic watch  8-) https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=willys+jeep+commercial&&view=detail&mid=92A08FB7F4959ECE184792A08FB7F4959ECE1847&FORM=VRDGAR

So... it tends to seem like Willis is most correct version?

EVERYTHING ELSE, General tips / How is it pronounced??
« on: August 28, 2016, 11:37:03 PM »
Ok... not a very important question... won't change election results or make the Jeep go faster but how is the manufacturer's name pronounced??  My Dad always calls it a Willis... my education but lack of real CJ3A time thinks it should sound more like Willies.  Any thoughts one way or the other?  In the long run makes no real difference... no matter what I say Dad will always call it a Willis  :)

Gearboxes and axles / Re: What Grade Bolts for Hubs??
« on: November 09, 2016, 11:52:57 PM »
Thanks Old Time and Duffer.  My 3A came with a set of Dualmatic hubs that were a little beat and that is why I went with the old Warn locking hubs.  Those hubs had Grade 8 and they looked like they were original.  So... before reading this I had gone out and bought some Grade 8s that were longer and engaged more of the hubthreads.  Hoping to get it all back together this weekend.  The setup that Duffer has is pretty sweet and clean.  I wonder if ARP has some studs that would work??

Gearboxes and axles / What Grade Bolts for Hubs??
« on: October 08, 2016, 11:44:59 PM »
Did not find this with the search engine so forgive me if this has already been discussed...  What grade bolts should be used to secure the Warn locking hubs to the housing?  I have replaced with Dualmatic locking hubs with a good set of old school Warn Locking Hubs and the Warn hubs came with Home Depot stainless bolts... yet the Dualmatic had Grade 5 bolts.  I totally understand the better grade bolts for strength but were the bolts ever intended to act as shear bolts just in case someone did something wrong?  Or Grade 5 is appropriate and I should quit thinking so much?

Thank you... still trying to figure out this Jeep thing  ;)

Working on my project and getting stripped down to nothing but frame... and I pulled the rear axle assembly off which I have already replaced the spring, shackles, etc.  I notice on both of the rear shackles (zero miles) that the center line for the two threaded parts are not parallel?  Is that intentional or another Omix quality product?  How far out... with the bottom in alignment with each other the top is about an 1/8" out   :-? ... same direction for both.  Time to punt and get some better products?   :-/ Thank you

BODY and trim / Re: Seat Frames
« on: July 19, 2016, 10:28:29 PM »
Here are a bunch of pictures... tried to include critical dimensions.  The first group is the driver seat and as you can tell from one of the pics it has a slight twist but the seat back angle measurements provided are for the side bolted to the wheel well, so should be a good reference.  The driver and passenger side backs are the same.  Take a look and let me know where you need more information.  Good luck and sorry for the delay... sand blasting took longer than planned yesterday  >:(

Dannie... will take some pictures with the tape next to the frames tomorrow after work and post them for you.  Just the front seats?  The backs on my seats are solid... is that what you need?

Question... I had replaced the partial floor sections on my 3A and not at all pleased with the results... warped and did not replace all of the rust.  Looking at possibly just cutting it out and welding in the full floor panel with hat channels already installed... but so far it looks like only one replacement is available... the one with either the Omix or  MD Juan sticker.  Are there any US made options that may be of higher quality?  I have been able to find some misc pieces that are made in the States that are better quality but have not found anything for the floors.  Thank you!

That looks like some of my welds when I forget to turn on my gas bottle. ::)

But as mentioned before... contaminants from the backside may be causing grief.

Also make sure the drive wheel in the welder is the right size for the wire... some you can adjust the drive pressure or like on my Lincoln you can just flip the drive wheel 180 degrees.  Does the welder have a tip cleaner near by??  Typically a three fingered spring material that will slide inside the "cup" and clear all of the slag out of there.  That will need to be cleaned regularly even under normal conditions and more so when you have an out of position weld.  To make sure you have good penetration make sure to keep a good gap between the butted pieces.  Eastwood (or cheaper on Ebay) have some panel clamps that do a great job of keeping the pieces aligned as well as maintaining the gap needed.  http://www.eastwood.com/intergrip-panel-clamps-set-of-4.html

Good luck... and make sure to bounce around from one area to another when welding so you don't get the panel hot... I am still trying to figure out how to shrink metal after it gets too hot and oil cans  :'(

Really don't think you want to butt weld that since is it a structural element... that weld would end up cracking with the flexing... really needs to be the overlap like Tim mentioned.  I had the Walcks set of hat channels and the hump but ended up leaving the original in place and just cut and blended the new rails over the top of the existing... welded it up.

Looking very nice Hawk  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

For your fasteners are you using stainless?  Paint them?  Natural zinc?

I found my second oil line (don't ask why I have two) and it is smaller than the original attempted fire hose.  The second one has an OD of .460 inches and while there is no slop between the motor plate and the pump it is not compressed.  One battle down  :) :) .. few thousand more to go. :-/

Are you sure ;D

Glad to hear... Once I confirm that my other line has the same problem I will place an order. Thank you Bob!
