Here's some pictures with a slightly better camera...

Looks like the firewall tag is missing:

Here's the frame tag under layers of paint. I'll try to get that cleaned off this evening. I'm assuming the frame tag is going to have the same serial number as the other tags? I need there to be at least 1 Serial number still attached to the Jeep to get a legit title for it.  Looks like I can make out a "38" there on the end so I would guess so.   "74438"

If you already have this info, I apologize. http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/cj2a-serial-numbers-locations_topic13957.html

Thanks!  I found that last night.   Went out and looked this morning.  The dash and firewall tags are missing but the front frame tag is there.  Of course, it has 8 layers of paint on top of it.    Now I get to try to salvage that without damaging the numbers.    I think that's my only hope at getting it titled correctly.

So, am I reading it correctly that these things never really had legit titles.   There's no other "VIN" number other than the serial number.

I'm reading that it should be stamped in multiple places on the Jeeps.  I'm going hunting for those places tomorrow.

I agree with Pascal. I was looking for a dash shot, driver side shot, and a wheel well shot. Saw enough in your Photobucket spread.

At minimum, the Tub, Frame, Grill, Hood, and Passenger Fender are CJ2A. That doesn't mean for certain that it's a 2A, but this is fairly overwhelming evidence.

Honestly, it doesn't matter. It's a flat fender Willys. We like all of them here! 8-)

Hawk

Edit: I would add... The grill is an early 2A. This may confirm that it is, in fact, a 1946 model.

I also talked with my grandfather tonight and got all the paper work he has on it.  Serial Number is 74438.   That says it's a 1946 model.

Now, the major issue I'm having is that is obviously doesn't have a title and South Carolina is going be a major pain in the butt.

So it's a 3A with an M38 windshield?
Is that what you meant?

I'm not sure.  That's why I'm here.

I'm actually seeing a 2A with an M-38 windshield. More pictures please!

No clue.   I have more pictures but they're not much more detailed than the ones I've posted.

I've always been told that it's a 46 model.  Lately someone told me that it was an early 50's model.   I haven't dug in enough to know what I'm looking at yet.

Check this link.

Welcome. I like those model Cherokees also, but never owned one to drive. (Did buy one once for the engine, to put in CJ-7). My father-in-law has a 2001 that he brings by occasionally for me to do some work on.

It is so cool that you have your Grandfather's Jeep. It looks like a really nice staring point. PTO! nice! . . please replace those tail-lights. ;D

Yeah, this Jeep has been in the family for as long as I can remember.   I don't know much about it's history before that.

I'll find some better tail lights.  lol

I've been tasked with getting my grand-fathers old CJ back going. I figured I'd join here to learn a few things about these.

I'm pretty heavily into Jeeps currently but never anything this old. I'm big into Cherokee's.

My current project looks like this:

and my daily driver:

I have 2 other XJ's and 1 MJ Comanche. I also have 11 parts Jeeps.

So, here's the one you guys want to see:

I'm currently trying to acquire a useable title for it. I'm not even certain what year it is. I know it has the wrong windshield frame on it and it doesn't run. But it's all there so it shouldn't be too bad to get it going.
