"Original"-- Technical Questions, Answers, Observations / 2A vs 3A body
« on: September 10, 2016, 11:40:54 AM »
Found a rolling chassis on Craiglsit, with what looks like a good tub.  My question is, how do I differentiate a 2A from a 3A tub?

Below is the link, take a look and let me know what you think

As always, comments are appreciated.

Last year I bout a 3a out of state, which requires me to get a VIN inspection.  Unfortunately the title and VIN plate don't match.  (Lesson learned, always check the title to the vehicle BEFORE you leave!)

After doing some reading, it looks like an engine number that is listed on the title.  3J35926.  While the VIN tag show 35626.  And of course the engine number is completely different at U52862, as stamped on the block just above the water pump.

Biggest question is, that seems like an odd engine number?  If I look at serial numbers online, that would be a 46 model?

Thank you all very much for the advice.  Hopefully have tub off tomorrow.  Will share some photos of the separated units.

Getting ready to pull the tub off my new 49 CJ3A.  Couple of questions:

1.  How does the steering column attach to the steering box.
2.  Any tricks to disassemble the parking break cable from the hand break?  Lower half of the system is incased in grease and mud.
3.  Any suggestions on how to separate the body and tub, no lifting device at the house.  Will be myself and my little helper.

Gearboxes and axles / Axle seal number
« on: May 27, 2017, 05:09:35 PM »
Working on sealing up my Dana 27 front end. Mistakenly threw away the old inner seals. Anyone know what number they are?  Not impressed with the replacements I received mail order, in fact bent one on the install. Would rather buy something of quality. Any input would be appreciated

Bob, looks like you are correct.  Wont work on the 3A without a lot of work, so perhaps it can help fund the rest of the rebuild.

Anyone have an idea of its value?

I have a model 50 PTO, pulled it apart today and verified that it is good internally and buildable. But after looking at some photos and documentation online I am wondering is this for a CJ, or something like an FC. Any input would be appreciated.

Gearboxes and axles / Re: Axle bent? - need opinions

All, thanks for your input.  After seeing Jim's axle I think I am going to just run it the way it is.  My cheap fun project is getting expensive very fast.

Gearboxes and axles / Axle bent? - need opinions
« on: April 11, 2016, 11:15:53 PM »
Looks like my front axle may be bent.  The machined end of the axle tube is not square to the cast housing.  I have tried to measure, but haven't come up with the correct method.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hello all
After an inspection of my freshly stripped frame I have noticed the rear spring hangers on both sides seem to be out of alignment.  The inner tubes have broken the welds, though the drivers side appears to be tacked back into place, though not strait.

The drivers side front hanger has a crack, but the tube is still attached.  It looks like the passenger front bracket is off center and appears that the frame is slightly bent.  I may try to gusset the frame once its back into shape.

Most likely I will need to replace the 4 hangers.  My question is does anyone have suggestions on how to straiten it all up?  I was thinking of using tubing to keep the new units strait with each other.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks for the welcome!

Yes, the Willys is very original, for the most part anyway.  I am planning to keep it that way for the most part, due to money constraints, with the exception of a 12V conversion.

Look for original 6V parts for sale as the project progresses.

Hello from New Mexico.  Finally got a Willys after years of waiting.  Going to be a project for myself and my son.

We got it running, now time to take the body off and repair the running gear.

Lots of questions to come!
