Your CJ-3A Project / Re: The preservation of "Hoover" - my '51 CJ3A
« on: November 17, 2019, 08:44:54 PM »
I love seeing intricate repair jobs using original sheet metal!

It seems to be the hard way sometimes,  but I think it is fun.   I am an amateur,  but watching some of the builder shows on tv,  and build threads on the forums,  gives me a little something to emulate.

This shows starting point,  (photos from earlier post).

.

A friend on '2Apage gave me a CJ5 toolbox.  It had some rust issues of its own,  but some of the gutter was in much better shape than Hoover's.   Apparently early CJ5 toolbox lids are similar,  because I was able to cut out that gutter and weld into my '3A box.

The photo below shows how I used it.

Blue sections were cut from CJ5 box  . .  the red sections had to be made from scratch,  because the CJ5 box was rusted out there also.

I have not been on forum for a while.   I started tinkering on Hoover a little yesterday, and reminded me that I have not posted any photos of some progress in past months. (not a lot,  but better than none).

To repair original toolbox,  I cut parts from another one out of a CJ-5

First photo shows the replacement for a rusted hole.  There was a huge bubble gum weld here,  not sure what that was for,  but it had to be cut out.

The rest of photos show the gutter replacement.   I used the original rivets in the D-ring

Last photo shows the toolbox setting in place.  Still need to weld it in.

Website Feedback / Oddball Characters

I noticed a lot of oddball characters in my threads after the conversion.   At first I thought it might be emoticons that got messed up in the transfer to new forum,   but it is not that.

It seems to occur only in spaces following punctuation.

I also thought it was just me,  but I looked around and see it other places.   This is excerpt from one of AThawk's posts:

Don't the photos in attachments also use forum storage?    ie.  placing the photo in gallery,  and then linking to it,  would use no more storage than if an attachment?

I always try to keep the file size of my photos fairly small.

Thanks   . .    I will continue to use it.

When there are a lot of photos to include,  it is nice to be able to insert photos into the body of the post,  rather than have them as attachments at the bottom of post.   I think the only way to get them up in the body text,  is to insert an "Img" link from an outside host.

Thanks for providing that option.

Is MyWillysPics.com  still a good place to keep photos, for posting here?   ie.   will it be around at least as long as the CJ3Apage?

WOW!  . . . the end result on "Nuthin' Fancy" looks REALLY fancy.   :D

I have been away from '3A page for a while,  busy with life, and my '2A (Wilson),  but started spending some time recently working on Hoover,  and checking out the page.

I feel a kindred spirit with your project because ours have such similar beginnings.  Our '3A's could be twins to start out. . .    Hoover will not look nearly as refined though in the end.  My goal is for it to look like a survivor,  flat paint, dents and all.

Enough about mine . .   I skimmed thru your entire thread,  and I am impressed with the workmanship.   I hope to go back soon to study in more detail

VERY NICE !!

  . . .
I spent some hours on this and wondered why do I bother with this stuff, but I guess it just is something I enjoy fixing.
So that's it, I promise! I'll report on my thread in the "stock 3A" section about the rest of the metal work underway.

The corner looks much better,  after your mods.  I would say it was worth the time.  :)   Especially since (like me) you enjoy that type of thing.

I am considering same thing ->  11" in front, and leaving stock 9" in rear.    I have one pair of 11" hiding around here somewhere.

My '2A has 11" at both ends,  and it is easy to lock up the rear, even with 32" or 31" tires. . .  I am wondering if the '3A would be more "balanced" by leaving weak brakes in rear, and putting stronger ones in front.

Hoover will be used offroad, and my experience with '2A is that 9" are too scary,  especially if they get wet.

I agree that 20 would be too thin.

I used a couple sheets that have been around my garage for years.  One was .050,  and one was .057. . .  unfortunately for me,   by the time I got to doing the passenger rear quarter,  all I had left was the .057.  For me,  that was a PAIN to bend into shape.  ;D

My floor patches are .075  :o  . . again, because I had a bunch of it.   No oil-can in those floors.   ;D

Tonite I just cut out some of front fender,  I measured .038 in an unrusted section.

I did not have time this evening to read and digest the entire post,  but looks like you may have helped solved one of my issues with Hoover.  (what to do about missing radiator)

Thanks!!

Keep us informed on how it works out.  :)

oh,  you had me laughing -> "But I noticed a mist coating of coolant on my glasses with each lap!" ;D
