Hello MikeB,

Sorry for the slow response, got side tracked with another project. Really appreciate measurements using attached photo as reference when you have time.

Since my original posting, I've got hold of a D44 front axle, bits to build a full float rear D44, a 4L60E with a 23 spline Altas adapter that I hope can be mated to a D300 t/c (possibly with a custom adapter), will be looking into this into December.

Much appreciated
Mike C

Your Modified 3A Project / M38/CJ3A build - planning stage

Hello All,

Im just starting to plan the build of an M38/CJ3A/CJ3B that will run 33s and will be used for mild offroading in the UK. My initial starting point is an M38 chassis, front D44, parts to build a full floating rear HP D44 (F150 center section/Herm the Overdrive Guy full float kit/disc brakes).

My first big decision is what engine to use. I have a complete 2001 Chevy Blazer fitted with a Vortec 4.3L V6/4L60E box, however I am concerned about the engine height, its just about 32. Can anything be done to reduce engine height? Ive heard rumours of fitting an S10 sump? I dont have a body tub, will probably get a new one from MD Juan (drastically cheaper than the basket cases available in the UK) and so Ive got choices, that said I am really keen on the M38/CJ3A bonnet look. Used a lot of MD Juan body panels previously when restoring an M201 Hotchkiss Jeep (MB built under license in France in the 50s).

Be great if I could get in touch with somebody who has used a Vortec 4.3L V6, so I can get some measurements etc.

tah

Hello All,

Over the last 15 years Ive owned several Jeeps including a heavily modified TJ and a fully restored Hotchkiss M201 (Willys MB built under licence in France in the 50s).  Joining the forum as I am at the very early stages of planning a CJ3A/M38 build (I have a chassis and a front D44), if possible using a 4.3L V6 Vortec from 2001 Chevy Blazer.  I know these engines pretty well, as Ive recently stuck one in a Buggy that Im currently finishing.  Looking to make contact with somebody who has already used the same engine in a CJ3A/M38 build as I have a lot of questions such as how they handled an engine height of 32 inches.
