OK I will give the 4WD a try I have lock outs on the front so it wont matter if its in all wheel drive on the hard road anyways thanks for the help.

I did a parade with the 3A this weekend this may be a stupid question do these transfer case have a low range? I pushed the shifter forward and let out the clutch and nothing just like its in neutral I know the military version has a hi-lo.

Just an update when you get dragging brakes and your pedal looses its travel back the adjustment of the push rod off. My problem was the piston was sitting over the bypass hole in the reservoir preventing the build up of pressure from the expanding brake fluid to escape into the master. If you look how the manual says to adjust the push rod it says to only have a half inch of freeplay on the pedal that doesnt work your supposed to have a half inch of freeplay BEFORE contacting the piston so I adjusted the pushrod so it had just enough pressure to hold it into the divot in the back side of the piston. I have a couple inches of travel in the pedal now but no more dragging brakes and it stops good as expected for the technology of the time it was manufactured.

I had thought of the flexible hose problem but I would think that would keep the front brakes dragging but not pressurize the MC tomorrow I will check to see if the cap is vented. One other thing the pedal travel does not increase after the jeep cools down so that eliminates a heat related issue.

5
Yes I have adjusted the master cylinder push rod there is no more adjustment left in it the adjuster is bottomed out and I tried both top and bottom adjustment cams on the front brakes its only the front brakes that are affected.

I have been able to drive my jeep around now that it runs good but Im having an issue with brake pedal travel. I started out with a half inch of travel but the front brakes were dragging a bit and I couldnt adjust them out far enough to keep them completely off the drums. Finally I went under the jeep and adjusted about 3/4 inch of travel in the brake pedal and no problems no dragging shoes drove like it should bit now Im back to a quarter inch of travel but still no dragging shoes. Im almost afraid to drive it to far now if I loose the remaining travel it might leave the brakes dragging again any suggestions what to do or what may be causing the problem?

I have a decent set sitting around they need the bottom section of hat channel replaced if you need them.

SUCCESS moved the oil pump drive gear over two teeth now it runs like it was supposed to timing adjustment is in the center of the adjustment slots finally were ready to roll in the parade.

Solved the stumbling problem with the jeep yesterday I bought a new distributor the engine runs good now through acceleration but the timing issue still remains. I have no timing marks anywhere on the engine so I brought #1 cylinder to TDC and scribed some on the timing gear cover and pully. When useing a timing light there is a one inch gap between the marks timing is retarded and no adjustment left with the distributor. Today I am going to remove the oil pump and move the drive gear a tooth th get more timing adjustment. The old distributors advance weights werent working as they should and this distributor has the electronic ignition already built in its a pretty nice unit $125 shipped to my door.

Im still at an impass with my distributor mine is the later version pictured the springs on the advance weights seem pretty stiff. I wonder if they use the same spring maybe that is the problem if you gun it the engine takes right off but if you gradually accelerate it stumbles and wont accelerate past a certain point.

Thanks Tim which way did you turn it I dont want to have to disassemble it again if I turn it the wrong way my distributor is turned all the way to the right the jam bolt is at the top of the adjustment slot on the back of the distributor.

I have gone over the whole thing on the jeep now what I have noticed is the distributor has been turned all the way to the end of its adjustment. I have a friend who thinks it is one tooth off a vacuum gauge tells me its timing is running retarded but there is no more adjustment to advance it. How does one go about setting the distributor one more tooth forward since there is no drive gear on the distributor shaft?

13
No I was going to check the timing too I looked for a vacuum leak but found nothing out of the ordinary.

14
I have been over most of the possible problems so far maybe the weights in the distributor may be seized not letting the distributor advance thats my next place to look.

I just got the carter YF carb back from the rebuilders and still it stumbles and backfires at half throttle and above. I dont know whats next I really getting POed this jeep has been all redone and it still refuses to run right. The engine runs like a top when idleing an starts great but when it reaches a point it stops accelerating and falls on its face. It reminds me of a 1970s chevy truck with the vacuum advance hose left off the carb runs great to a certain point then stumbles and backfires Im at a loss on this one carbs have never been my strong point in working on engines.
