Thanks  for the responses.  As I noted above, it has been some time since I messed with a distributor and a timing lights, although I currently maintain 11 vehicles, and only 2 have distributors. .  I'll work on the dist and have some consolation that a stuck dist is NOT uncommon on a L134.  I tsill wonder if the dist. cap is wired correctly.  I think I'll hook the timing light to the grounded number 2 wire --remember number 2 cy does not fire, but is part of the air compression system.   Regards

I finally got around to timing my Hesse Hornet as it was very difficult to start and when it does, it only runs a bit and poorly at that. (FYI the HH is an air compressor that is based on the L134 using cys 1 and 4 to run and cys 2 and 3 to compress air.) Got out some tools I haven't used in years --timing light, remote start switch, etc. When I hooked the time light to cy1, the mark on the front pulley was at least 15 degrees BEFORE the 5 degree mark. So, backed off the two 1/2 inch bolts holding the dist and tried to rotate it. NO GO. Then I noticed that the plate just under the dist. was slotted and I moved that from one extreme to the other, but that made no diff in the timing. Should the dist rotate, or is the plate under the dist, which seems to make sense to me, what changes things. Could be the dist is stuck on full advance as well. Next step??? Too tired to mess with it more today as Spring has arrived and I am busy with outside work. Another thing could be that the wiring is wrong. Number ONE plug wire in the the dist is about"2 o'clock". The HH originally had a 2 wire dist cap, I am told. They are long gone, so my HH , like the two others I have seen, uses a 4 wire cab with cys 2 and 3 wires grounded to the block. Thanks

Thought 70 lbs was low.  As for air pressure  release, the HH has a warning  on it stating not to start the engine with the air drain valve closed.   I want to check timing when I get a chance.   I assume the "cut" in the flywheel pully is TDC to be alighned with the pointer on the block.  Since the HH does not have a battery ( or gen/alt, for that matter), I have to get it close to another vehicle to " jump start' it  --not difficult to do, but requires moving some vehicle aroound in my barn.

I have a Hesse Hornet air compressor --it is essentially a Jeep L4 engine that runs on cy's 1 and 4 and compresses air on cy's 2 and 3. I find it hard to start and have gone thru the carb. Today I did a compression check and found 70 and 68 lbs on cy 1 and 4. What is a good reading for a vintage Jeep flat head?? I don't think that engine has much over a 5.5 cr, does it, so maybe 70 lbs is ok. I need to check the timing, but with 6 inches or more of snow predicted for tonight, I had to chain up my tractor and stop playing with the toy! Thanks

I finally got  to fitting the temp probe to my Jeep engine on the Hesse Hornet.  It appears from what you guys told me earlier, that the stock 4 cy Jeep  L134 had a place in the head for the probe.  Because Hesse made their own head for the compressor, no fitting.  I finally used the plug on the right side of the water pump --as you look at it from the front.  I had to get creative because the probe was too long and wide for the opening. I will not be surprised if it reads low, but then Hesse never saw fit to put any temp gauge on their units.   However, I have some more work on the unit before I refill it with anti-freeze to see if this all works.

Still looking for an entry for the temp gauge. I removed the water drain on the right side of the block , but unfortunately the temp probe was too long. Talked to another HHornet owner and he said his never had a temp gauge. I guess they never had a temp gauge.

There is a large plug on the right (Passenger) side of the water pump behind the oil filter.  That is probably where I'll try i to get a probe in, but now that I type this, I wonder how deep that will be.  Will the probe hit bottom or worse, the pumb impellers?  Hmm. Well, this is all on the to do list.  I broke the stud off where the exhaust pipe attaches to the maniford.  Of course, the bolt on the opposite side, came right off.    i\I did notce some hair line cracks on the intake --wonder if it is sucking air?    I'll put that on the list to check out when it is back to running .   Thanks guys for yur continued help and interest.

The head on the L134 was made by Hesse for the compressor. It has no water outlet that I could find, which I think is strange, bearing in mind that the engine will run as a stationary engine and if using lots of air, it will be a hard run for the L134. My unit is a complete unit and running unit when I bought it. It has an air pressure gauge (of course) and an oil pressure gauge as well as an on/off switch and a push to start button. That's it. It does not have a gen or alt. or fuel tank and I think it was most likely mounted on a service truck and used the truck's fuel and electric. I will install a temp gauge on it somehow.

I recently acquired a Hesse Hornet air compressor. In case you don't know what one is, it is an air compressor based on a Jeep L134 engine with cylinders numbers 1 and 4 operating as per usual, but 2 and 3 pumping air. The Hesse company of KC, MO made them in the 1970's???. This unit does not have a water temp guage and as far as I can tell, never had one. I want to use a mechanical gauge, so my question is :Where does a CJ "plug" into the L134 with a sensor for the gauge?? Thanks

"Original"-- Technical Questions, Answers, Observations / Timing mark

I have a Hesse Hornet air compressor . These are basically a L134 Jeep engine running on 2 cy's and pumping air on the other 2. I want to check timing and note there is a "pointer" on the block right over the front pully with a T and 5. OK, TDC and 5 degrees before TDC, I assume. Now I need a mark on the pulley --BTW it is a double pulley, although only on is used for the governor --no alt or gen. There is a small V notch on the inside pully. Is this the mark I need to time it? thanks

What can the learned members of this fine site tell me about the Jeep industrial engine that is used in my Hesse Hornet air compressor --Cylilnders 1 and 4 operate per usual, while 2 & 3 are the air compressor?  Numbers, etc are as follows:  Model IPU 4L  ( I figure that is industrail power unit, 4 cy L head)   Engine assembly ---913102    Serial number  IVL 8860   and block Casting   908756.    The approximaate date of build would be nice to know.   Thanks

Thank you all for your help.  I painted the manifold today and will get it back on tomorrow.

I took the manifold off the L134 engine on my Hesse Hornet compressor to repair the broken stud where the exhaust pipe attaches. While it was off, I took the Carter off and and took it apart to clean it. . So now, a couple of weeks later, I can't figure out how the coiled spring on the heat riser goes. There is a metal "tab" attached to one of the four bolts on the junction where the exhaust and intake manifolds meet, HOWEVER I cannot remember if the end of the spring goes under or over this tab. Help, and thanks.
