All,

Thanks for the continued assistance.

Now that I have reduced the old seal to shrapnel, what is the best way to remove the outermost ring of the old seal, since that's about all that's left of it? The seal puller can't get much of a grip on the old seal remnants.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the responses. I have a seal puller but want to make sure I'm pulling on the right thing. In the picture below, is the seal the ring I have the yellow line on?

Okay guys, I need your expertise. I'm working on replacing the oil seal on the transfer case. I have removed the drive shaft, parking brake drum, and am now somewhat confused. I removed the 4 bolts that hold the parking brake backing plate but there is a round "do-dad" holding it in place. I can wiggle/rotate the backing plate but it won't come off.

The "do-dad" in question is circled in red. What is it and how do I remove it?

I found a local guy selling a hard top and doors for a 1956 3B. Will these fit a '53 CJ3A?

It did it in 2nd and 3rd. I checked the transfer case fluid level. It was pretty low. I wonder if I have a leak. Gotta get some GL-1 lube and fill 'er up.

Yes. Pinion oil seal was installed flat side out. I think it may have been the dust cover spinning or contacting the yoke or differential as there was no felt between it and the pinion oil seal. I have put the felt in place and will be topping off all fluids. We shall see what, if any, difference that makes.

Looking at the exploded view of the rear end it doesn't show where the felt ring goes. You're saying it goes between the seal and dust cover. That makes sense but when I took the thing apart the first time there wasn't one.

Did this come from the factory with one? It's possible the seal had been replaced before and the felt was forgotten/omitted.

I think the seal went in all the way and was properly seated.

I saw online that there is a felt dust cover of some kind but I didn't see one when I replaced the bad seal. Where would that go in relation to the pinion seal?

I was wondering if the dust cover was rubbing myself. The sound almost has a ring to it like if you tapped the dust cover it would ring a little.

It does the same thing in 3rd.

If its in gear and I push the clutch in it will still do it. If I coast in neutral, it doesn't.

So I have a question for you gear-heads. Took the CJ out for the first time in 7 months today. Just replaced the rear pinion oil seal and wanted to take her for a test drive.

Drove about half a mile before it started making this awful squealing/screeching noise when I shifted into second. I stopped because it sounded bad. I checked the belt first thinking it sounded like a slipping belt. Nope. That wasn't it. Fired it up again, started off fine in first, but once I hit second it stated making noise again. I'm not sure what it was that was making the noise but it sounded like it was coming from right underneath the front seats.

I wonder if it's the clutch?? Here is a link to a youtube clip of the sound its making. You can here the click of me shifting into second gear and the squealing starts at about the 7 second mark.

Hello everyone,

What axles do I have on my '53 3A do I have? They are stock axles and I believe the rear is a model 44. I'm not sure and I want to order new diff gaskets and need to order the right parts.

Once I have the new gaskets in what lubricant should go in the differentials? Are there different lubes for front and back or does it not matter?

Thanks for your guidance,
Justin

Yes it's a Cherokee. My daily driver is a 2000 Cherokee Sport.

I agree with ventport. I would change it back to factory. He's right that even though the difference at 175 is 30 less at the gauge, it could be at 210 degrees and read 155 and without the temperature gun, you'd have now way of knowing til there was steam coming out from under the hood.

It looks amazing. Nice work.

Our '53 runs at 180-190 in the summer and I would expect that even in cold weather it would still be around 170.

Sorry I don't know how to fix your problem.

Wow, thanks for all the great information guys. I really appreciate your inputs.

I now know I have been using the wrong terminology. I have a 6v resistor(?) that reduces the voltage coming from the battery. I have a 6v generator, not an alternator, and a 6v starter. All of these are powered by a 12v battery through the resistor.

New question: Would it make sense to just get a 6v battery and ditch the 12 if I don't really need it?

I think our next project will be to replace the befuddling tangle of old, fraying wires with an all new wiring harness, once it's in the budget.

My father and I are working on this project together when I'm home from college and couldn't do it without your advice.

Thanks again,
Justin
