Scout,
After I rebuilt my engine I had a similiar issue caused by several things. �Hesitation under load and occasionally popping through the carb. �I did the same checks with the points and condensers, fuel pressure, rebuilt the carb, checked the valves... �To make a long story short, double check your timing. �When I was completing my rebuild I incorrectly timed my engine and all I needed to make my engine run great was advance the timing about 10�. �

I normally use some stuff from NAPA.  High tack gasket sealant is what its called.  You brush it on the gasket or the mating surface and let it sit for a couple minutes, then mount the pieces together.  It seems to do a good job of holding the cork gaskets in place.

Hey,

I'll take a stab at the second question.  When I rebuilt my engine, I had everything stripped out.  I would remove that main cap and clean it as well as you can to remove any pieces of the old seals.  Then put it back on and put a dab of silicon on the end of the round rubber seal you insert into the main bearing cap.  When I did mine I had to shorten the rubber seal so the oil pan would fit properly.  I dont know if that's a common problem or not.  If you have more pictures of the first issue that may help.
