Thanks to both of you.  I looked for a possible link on this site but didn’t see one, the link you provided Rus was just what I hoped for.  I knew someone somewhere must have documented this.  Percy, glad to hear how you made out, gives me confidence to start it on my own and call for help if I get in a jam.

Hi All,
In the process of finishing a transfer case & transmission rebuild that will go into my running CJ3A.  As I have only done this installation on Jeeps with the bodies removed I’m considering how best to do this from underneath. Has anyone out there done this that could offer any advice on the best way to make this work smoothly?

Thanks in advance
Tom

Okay...this is driving me nuts.  I've installed the second brake light switch, and just like the first one, it leaks. Now I'm wondering if I have a bad fitting for the master cylinder. I was looking at it before I put the second one in and the part that is threaded for the brake light switch to screw into isn't threaded all the way in which doesn't let the switch screw in to the point it tightens against the fitting inside.  Don't know if I'm describing this in an understandable way, does this make sense, anybody else remember having a problem like this?

Gunslinger,

Thats a great name and you sure make me feel better by describing your learning curve. Ive felt like I cannot get anything right without having to do it two or three times and wondered if it was just me. I blew up the back axle on my CJ3 and decided to put a Dana 44 with a LockRite on it. Needless to say every step presented issues and when I finally got it together ended up having to take it completely apart to install one piece I didnt think I needed. Quite a process.
At any rate, its ready to go back on and will leave only the front axle as the only part of the Jeep I have not had completely apart at some point.
I hoping for the day I do more driving than wrenching.

Cheers

Gunslinger:

I just happen to have a Dana 44 on the bench right now. I have been in the process of rebuilding this axle to put in my 49 CJ3. These pictures might help you see where the zerts are located.

This is the driver side, the widening of the axle housing is where the outside bearing and race are located. Ill show that in the next pic.

You can see from this one how that zert feeds onto the bearing.

Other side.

You can see here that the comment above about just giving this a few squirts is right on. To much grease here will just squeeze it out into your brake assemblies and make a big mess.

Hope this helps, Ive been wrestling with this rebuild for months as Ive had to school myself on each step. Its rare to get a chance to see some of this stuff without 50 years of grease and crud caked on it.

And by the way, since were on the subject what do you guys think of these tooth patterns. Would you be happy with this?

Bob,
Thanks a lot for that. I clearly didnt do enough digging cause I missed that completely.
Its frustrating to have to pull that thing completely apart again but sure feels good to know for sure what the solution is and what I need to do to get it right. Once again this forum pulls my bacon out of the fire.

Thanks guys.
Bob I went through the instructions for the lockrite locker I put in and couldnt find anything that refers to that. How did you find that out?

Old time, here is what I put in. The numbers agree with what you asked.

So some time has gone by and I've done some work not only on the axle problem but figuring out how to get pictures posted on here without all that I had in PhotoBucket.  So here is where I am. I tore down the axle after it blew up, bought another axle to upgrade to the Dana 44, bought a LockRite locker to put in it and got everything cleaned up and assembled.  Here is the problem now.

If you look closely at this picture you can see that the outer axle bearing cup is recessed into the axle housing making it impossible to shim the axles to set the backlash.  I'm a bit stumped.  One issue I've run into on this project is the parts I'm getting.  Check this out.

What you are looking at here are two inner pion bearing cups from different suppliers.  Pretty obvious that they are dramatically different in size. The larger one has grinding marks on it because I trimmed it down so that I could put it in and take it out easily to find out how much shimming I needed to set rotational torque.  When I put the smaller one in (not noticing the size difference) it threw everything off and it wasn't til I pulled it apart that I noticed the difference in size.
The point of explaining all that is that I'm wondering if that might be the problem with the outer axle bearings and cups that I've installed. Have any of you guys run into an axle problem like this and also run into a problem with these aftermarket parts?
I'm trying to school myself on axle setup since I've not done this part before but its really a mind bender when the parts you get are a constant guessing game.

Anyway, here's the jeep I'm trying to get back on the road.

Thanks in advance
Tom

This comparison shows the difference between the Salisbury (left) and the Dana (right).

Hey guys, haven't been on in awhile but I've gotten into action and had a situation pop up. My rear differential locked up so I've got the rear axle pulled apart and found out when I got in there that it's a Salisbury axle. I had wanted to put a Lockrite in there so now I have the perfect opportunity to get some upgrades done. I have Dana 44 components and what I'm wondering is if I can put that stuff in the axle in place of the Salisbury components without issues, or if a Dana 44 axle is a completely different setup.
I've gone back through the pages on this discussion board and searched the site and can't find anywhere this has been discussed so I don't know if way out there on this.
This is the last part of these jeeps I haven't dug into so I've been on an axle crash course the last week or so.

Set me straight on this guys, I'm really up in the air on which way to go with this.

Cheers

I'd like to add my kudo's also.  I'm at this stage right now with a body that had to be scrapped.  I'll also be looking at a new body kit and will definitely look these over.

Interesting.  I asked the guy if these were MD Juan tubs and he said, "no Omix". So I guess he either doesn't know or doesn't want to say.  The MD Juan guys did a presentation in Hudson OH at the Midwest Willys meet and it sounded like they are getting the bugs worked out, I just wanted to make sure if it was one of their tubs it was a newer production version so-as to hopefully get one that is measured correctly. I take it you guys got yours a few years ago?
