Title: Greetings from San Diego
Post by: Avila51Willys on October 30, 2017, 10:49:56 PM
I have officially been bit by the Wiilys bug!  My grandfather recently passed away; he was 95 and went out with his boots on.  So proud of him.  He left his 1951 Willys to me...the only granddaughter!  He used the jeep from 1955 to about 1985 for hunting.  Once he busted his knee, the Willys got parked.  It has not moved since.  I pick it up in December.  My brother checked it out for me...engine seized, wiring destroyed, and 4 flats.  I have never worked on a vehicle beyond oil changes and changing tires.  So I will likely rely on this forum as a resource, experience, and advice.  Thanks in advance!

Welcome aboard. A Willys is a great vehicle to learn with. They're simple but effective. Keep us informed and ask questions!

Avila51Willys,

Welcome to the 3A Page.  Just a quick heads up...we all like pictures!

Lots of really smart 3A people here.  Come back often.  And don't be shy about questions.

Tim

I will post photos as soon as I pick it up.  The current engine (283) is seized.  I'm thinking of picking up a rebuilt 283.  I also have a lead on 1984 CJ axles.  Not sure what they are beyond working and off a 1984 Jeep.  The axles have better brakes and higher gears, which is needed in San Diego.  The axles are wider though.  I don't plan on being trail-rated but rather urban-rated.  Although, I want my daughter (7 years old) to have the latitude to go off-roading if she desires when she inherits the Willys.  I'm also going to need to rewire the whole thing.  Apparently it has been home to a colony of mice.  I'm really excited to get started... I'm already combing starting to buy stuff.  Thoughts?

The brakes from the 1984 will fit on the 1951 axles and I'd look for a stock engine if the V8 is trashed.
