Title: Hello to All
Post by: trijjicon on March 15, 2016, 02:51:12 PM
Ty Dave & Pascal for helping me log in. My name is Randy & I live in SE Ga. USA.  About a week ago I purchased a '49 CJ3A. For being this far South, the body is in relatively good shape.  It needs repainting and abit of floor pan work. There r some rust holes all the way thru. It drives and shifts good & is in the shop for carb work & brakes. My plans r to restore it to some degree but not to showroom quality for I want to 4-wheel in it b4 committing to that. I have some photos & can upload if I have an e-mail address. I don't know how to upload any other way. Tell me how & I will give it a go. Thnx guys.

That's a cool old Willys.  I'm not sure, but it could be a 1949 CJ-2A.

If so, it's pretty rare, and kind of unique.

Thnx QJ & Athawk11: I'm kinda fond of it also. On the left side of the firewall, a plate says CJ3A & on a plate just above that, the Serial # reads CJ3A14499. However, the last know tag issued to this Jeep has the VIN as 13879.  Also, I have another request to QJ (if u don't mind). Pascal is u, right? & some1 named Dave helped me get setup to log in.  I've lost the temp password one of u gave me ( I think it was 1 of u). I sent a PM to some1 named John but I haven't heard back yet. I need to change my profile & can't get in. Any help of course would b greatly appreciated. TY

Well, those numbers certainly have you in the right place.  I was thrown by the seat frames.  They look like the 2A style.

The admins will get with you on the password.

No worries on the seat frames.  They fit...and that's all that matters.

Generally, 2A and 3A seat frames are not interchangeable.  I have a 3A with 2A seat frames. I was required to modify the tub to make them fit right.  Yours may have gone through a similar modification.

Now Tim has me guessing as to whether I have a 2A or a 3A.  I'd like to know which for parts ordering & such & peace of mind when some1 asks...whatcha got there? Is there anything else I can check to verify what this is?  Does that Serial # I used to identify this Jeep, count as a VIN #? The last known tag receipt had 13879 as VIN & the Serial # I was CJ3A14499. So, the Police Officer & I changed the registration to CJ3A14499 cuz neither 1 of us knew where to look for that 13879. 2A's have 3 VIN #'s, correct? Where do I find my 3 #'s?

This is a helpful resource when comparing a 2A and a 3A...

http://www.cj3a.info/cj3a/cj2acj3a.html

Title and vin #s are sometimes tricky on these old Willys.  At the time, States had different rules.  Some States used the engine serial number.  Others used the serial number on the data plate.

Generally, an original engine will have a larger number than the data plate serial number.  They were making more engines than CJ3As.  They will never match.  In your case, the title # might be the engine number.  Look for this number on the flat area ( boss ) just behind the water pump.

An early 3A will have a data plate and a body plate mounted on the passenger side firewall...same as a 2A.

Most 2As will also have a frame tag.  And most 2A frame tags were mounted on the front frame horn...outside edge...driver side.  Late 2As and all 3As have no frame tag.

There is more,  but this stuff should keep you busy for a while.

The # on the engine is 3J14734. The # 13879 (what was printed on the last known tag receipt) is on the plate right below the Serial # CJ3A14499.  Also, on the plate that has the 13879, it says CJ3A Body. Thnx for the info, Tim.

Hello Bob: Yes, I can most certainly snap a shot of that. Whatcha looking for in that area?

Three different right front fenders were used on CJ-3As in 1949. I'm just trying to determine the approximate percentage of each type. That area is different on all three so it's the easiest way to know which fender you have.

Thanks!!
