So here is the story,
I once was stationed in Hawaii, owned a wrangler (99 TJ Sahara etc), worked on military vehicles (anything and everything with wheels) got out, and got the 'jeep' bug some crazy how. Did some research (quite apparent that it was not sufficient in the least bit) from various jeep forums around the web. Went and purchased a "1950 Willy's CJ-3a" with a 2a windshield on it. drove it for a while, it broke, got it fixed, broke again. Now I have to fix it, and am at the point where I would like to identify what is what to fix the things that are not correct and make it what it should be. I will post as many pictures as I can, but I would like to know where and what to photo aside from what I have already.
Thank you all in advance for your consideration in this matter.
Wormtape out!

What are you doing for instrumentation? Take pics of everything from front to back and top to bottom. Spare no angle. I smell the vinegar and oil of a Jeep Salad.
-
I second Scout's post.. Pictures. Especially of where the front bumper mounts, the wheel house tops with a tape measure to see how long they are (3A ones are shorter, giving more room behind the wheel) and the front motor mounts on each side. (Drivers side by fuel pump points forward on a 3A)
I don't see the classic keyed coil mounting holes indicating a 2A dash in your one pic so you might really have a 3A....or that part of the dash has been cut away already.
Looks like you have a pile of fun ahead getting it back to stock.
And welcome to the 3A page!
-
welcome to the page. they should have taken the drill away from the person that drill them holes in the dash . :( :( if interest I have a cj2a dash to sale.

Welcome! looks like quite the project!

Welcome! Looks like someone stole your clutch and bell housing. ;) I'm guessing this is really just one of your repairs.
Lots of photos. Using a free host site like Photobucket, or the like, is a good way to post a ton of photos.
I think I speak for this entire group when I say, "We all get excited to see old Willys Jeeps come back from the edge!"
Thanks for sharing.
Tim
P.S. Someone really hated your parking brake. :-/

Thank you for the hearty and warm welcome. Also a thanks goes to athawk11 for the photo bucket suggestion, setting that up right now. Should be somewhere around 50 photos I for perusing at your leisure. I will post the link once I have the stuff on there!
Thanks again!

I guess that is how I link the album, cheers and thank you all for your input. will post more tomorrow most likely, if you all are ok with that.

Very interesting. You have a 1950 CJ-V35/U USMC waterproof radio Jeep. There have been a few modifications made to it over the years.
I'd like to include a couple of your photos on my website here if that's okay with you...

Wow Bob! You always surprise me!
Your jeep has a lot of mod but I really like those red engine, I'm sure they got more power just because they are red. If I repaint one, I will paint it red for sure. Tim did convince me with his one.
Oups...Welcome!

That certainly is some exciting news to you me, I have mo issues what so ever about pictures being utilized elsewhere, so long as it is correct. By the great divine, that is incredible, what was the deciding factor may I ask that led to that inferrance? Very very curious as to that, and to which way I proceed now.
Thank you guys again. So I guess I need to travel to the cj-v35u forums and pages. :)
-
may I ask that led to that inferrance?
The PTO cutout in the floor between the seats, the narrow toolbox (so the between the seats generator would fit) and the extra bracing on the right front fender to support the waterproof, radio noise suppressed, voltage regulator.
I need to travel to the cj-v35u forums and pages.
I don't know of any V-35 forums!
-
that is brilliant, I just arrived at a similar conclusion after looking at the v-35 page you have sir, quite pleased to say I am glad I asked before I welded.
So now I must inquire, where do I go to get proper parts for the restoration, and who has anything to trade? :P
Best news I have had for a while now. Thank you ;D ;D ;D
-
So now I must inquire, where do I go to get proper parts for the restoration, and who has anything to trade?
Many of the parts that are unique to a CJV35 are very difficult to find. How accurate do you want it to be?

Given the uniqueness of this 'jeep', I suppose that best interest would be to do it as accurate as possible.
-
Meaning a well done body, proper major components, but not 100% with the radio and all, at least not for a good while yet. Running stopping and driving on the correct parts would be the I think a good start?
-
Your plan sounds good - "Running stopping and driving on the correct parts". A V-35 has many unique components, but most of them are just "bolt-on" parts, so you can have a driver and then add the other stuff as time and $$ permit. Probably the most difficult thing you would need to deal with (to be original) is the steering setup. It has been completely modified. And then there is the body work. It would need a bunch of the extra holes and stuff repaired. As you noted the windshield frame is wrong. The hood is also incorrect but if a notch was cut in the side for the snorkel most people would not know it was the wrong hood. The tailgate on a V35 is unique but I didn't see a photo of it. The fuel tank is not correct, it will work just fine - but the radio generator won't fit without the correct tank.
BTW do you have the serial number for this Jeep?
-
unfortunately not, and am more than likely going to have to put a lot of work in to finding it. I was able to find quite a few older registrations for it, whilst digging through the 2 bins of parts that it came with. The oldest one was from 99 and it uses the same # as I registered it with. I am thinking that maybe in the mid 90's was when the data plates were removed and the ugliness had forcibly set in, bringing it to current. However I have the name of the individual I bought it from, and the name from the title from 99, so time to find a tracker... XD
Am I correct in my thoughts that using a good number of M38 parts would be acceptable? it seems that the systems and major components are pretty similar? :-?
-
I guess it wouldn't hurt to mention that, I bought it in El Dorado, Ca some months ago. (tail end of 2013 roughly)
-
The electrical system on a V-35 is 6 volt, and pretty much unique to that vehicle. It will be the most difficult system to find parts for. M-38s are 24 volt so there isn't any overlap.
A CJ-V35/U has a lot of CJ-3A, some MB, and some M-38 in it - along with a bunch of unique stuff. Select any component and I can probably tell you more details about it, why it is different, and what parts are similar.
-

Does the registration have the 5 digit serial number (10xxx) on it?
-
No, it does not, but perhaps they used a hood number for it? 168595? Do you perhaps have a restoration album for your v35u? I would very much like to see what right looks like.
I would like to extend my continued gratitude to this forum and its members again.
also new photo bucket link to loads more photos

That does sound like a hood number. I will check later today to see where that number fits into other known V-35 hood numbers.
I do not have a restoration album for mine (CJV-35 10588). Actually I didn't even restore it, just fixed some broken stuff and painted it Forest Green. I can help out with questions about what is correct for a V-35 when it left the factory.
-
168595 is not in the range of surviving V-35 hood numbers. 162595 would be.
-
Well, cannot be lucky all the time I suppose, I could see how it possibly may have changed over the years to an 8 from a 2, but I digress, I am doing steering and grill removal this weekend, for clean up and prep for the frame clip and fix. Is there any information that you may be able to provide me for these tasks?
thanks again.
Wormtape=going ham!
-
The steering and frame should be the same as a 1950 CJ-3A.
-
O.k. cool, the steering stuff will be off the shelf, off hand would the length for the frame after the grill be in the manual or?
-
oh before i forget how is the horn routed on these?
-

Probably better than any measurement, you can see where the end of the frame is in this photo...

Some things to consider...
The front axle is not correct, and it is wider than the original, so original tie rods won't fit.
Take a good look at the dual master cylinder conversion to be sure it won't interfere with an original steering box.
You will need to find an original bellcrank bracket and weld it to the front crossmember.
-
Ok, cool, if it isn't too much trouble, would you mind sending me a pm about various literary publications that may pertain to this?
Thank you again!
-
Ok, that is nice to know, about the axle, the brakes are all coming off anyways so I can re-do them and clean up the routing. Most likely will go back to dual when it is all said and done.
As far as it goes where would I post things for barter, as ito have much to barter for and seemingly less to barter with haha.
-
Portrayal Press did have reprinted CJV35/U Parts, Operators, and Service Manuals. Haven't checked since the new owners purchased the company.
http://www.portrayal.com/
CJ-3A literature would get you through most anything except the electrical and underwater stuff.
-
I briefly looked over their site, :(... Is that your book that Walck's has for sale?
The front axle should be a Dana 27 with a modified "pumpkin" cover, correct?
As for the steering, Would it perhaps be a Ross?
-
Walcks does have my book for sale. The front axle should be a Dana 25 with Ross steering.
-
Ok thank you for clarifying that. Means my reprint service manual is not 100% right. Bummer.
-
Thank you for the help so far. Time to gravitate to tech talk haha.
-
I just found this Thread, i have a partially restored V35. Most of my knowledge came from Bob W. I doubt i can add much, but as you get farther along, i would be glad to try. There are some of the more rare parts that are being planned to be duplicated. But these are more related to the radio gear that is almost always missing. If there is anything you need don't hesitate to ask. h8pvmnt@hotmail.com

Thanks much, I've been away for a while, with my head and my fourth point of contact in unison. needless to say, the jeep is sort of back on track. I will be posting some for trade stuff here soon, as I am trying to get rid of "wrong" and replace with "right" with minimum cost. the body work is what is going to kill me though, so mostly I am looking for a lot of detail photos of all of the panels and all the angles. that and a lack of good publications directly relating to this project. still need to get his book... hmm...
