Title: Another Texan
Post by: Biotex on January 06, 2014, 01:52:01 PM
Hello all, I'm in Alpine (Big Bend Nat'l. Park area). I let a guy talk me into removing a couple of Jeeps from some property he just bought.  I thought they were 3B's, but the guys on the 3B page quickly straightened me out. So here I am with a couple of very rough chunks of American steel.

I'll get some pictures up soon.

Ok, so here are some pictures. At this point I have very little money into them. Should I quit now? :-X

Does the complete Jeep have a tag screwed to the firewall near the air filter? The serial number from the tag will determine the year. There should be a letter and two digits on the radiator top tank of the parts Jeep that may help with it's year. Also check the drivers side of the transmission for a date casting number. If these don't work there are many other clues we can use.

Welcome!

It depends of what you want to do with it. 100$ is a good price. It's the price for a good frame.

The first complete jeep look like an early 3A maybe 1949. I say early because there is a radiator rod. This rod was there when the radiator was mounted on the frame like the 2A and not on the grill.

I like the original side step mounted on the rear. I also like the stop light.

Google Lawrence title and see what you'll have to do to get a rebuilders title. If you get a receipt for the parts from the guy that may be the way to go to build your own jeep.

That said, the cheapest jeeps can be the most challenging and the most expensive to rebuild. Keep on the lookout for a good used motor as your have the same appearance as the boat anchors I have gotten with similar jeeps. Ditto for gearboxes.

Good luck, I'm up by Abilene. I have a collection of similar parts jeeps. Someday, I will build a jeep from them instead of just robbing a part or two.

Found the tag, thanks. It confirmed CJ3A
S/N 44245

So am I correct that this is a 1950 production Jeep? Guessing towards the first part of the year like around March.

Welcome Biotex

I love that part of the country - my favorite place to hike - Big Bend - many good memories. I live near Ft Worth.

If you decide to sell any parts let me know since I have a 49 CJ3A I am restoring. I am looking for some good used items. You can private message me as well.

Good luck with the rebuilding process - the Jeep with the body is a very good candidate for rebuilding. You will find the folks on this site to be very helpful and supportive of your efforts. Some times all you need is a little support to give you the confidence one needs to succeed.

Looking forward to your project.

Kind regards,

Tumbleweed....(George)
