Title: Compass that would work in a 3B
Post by: Orlo on October 14, 2023, 09:31:15 AM
I temporarily mounted a compass in my 3B but it would not calibrate due to so much metal around it.
Has anyone found a solution?

Orlo,
Some compasses can be shielded.   You didn't mention (or show) what kind you have.

Some compasses are sold specifically for vehicles where they can function with metal around them.

"Wouldn't calibrate"......not sure what that means.
Could be "too much metal", could be something else. How old is it?

Do you have another compass to check accuracy with (away from the jeep)?
If yes, how many degrees is it off?

I think car compasses (generally made to be around some metal) are only sufficient to give a general direction, maybe good to 8 points of the compass, or a little better depending on quality and magnetic declination (that depends on your specific geographic location).

They certainly aren't made for real navigation, but they do look old-school cool.

Good luck!

Hi Ron,
Thank you!

The compass was a brand new, inexpensive one from a Marine supply store.
By "would not calibrate" there was not enough adjustment to overcome the effects of  all that steel and or magnetic  fields created by the ignition.
Away from the jeep it would behave normally.

Was this compass that isn't working well made by the Tates Compass Company?

He who has a Tates is lost........ :D

...couldn't resist that one......
