Title: 12 volt rebuilt genertor an regulator issues
Post by: tow hook on August 30, 2022, 02:09:58 PM
i had some wires burn up july 4th coming home from ice cream. the armature arched and burnt up and took the regulator with it.

so a new armature/ bushes was put in and a new regulator. the shop that did the work wanted to tune it so i was working right.( i have less then 50 miles on the 1st armature.) well at the shop it arched again ! during the tuning of the two ,  the fella had * and cut the wires so no damage was done.

turns out the field coil was bad, and caused both failures. when the guys tested it it never made power on its own. with the new field coil it was working correctly. so they ate some cost. due to a bad mis diagnois.

now with a totally rebuild gen. and new reg when it's in the jeep it's not making power. but works on the bench.( the bench tester spins at 1750 rpm.) my f head doesn't normally go that high i've been down for 2 months now. to bad there isn't any one else near by that does the same work. any thoughts ? as to why i don't have power

Make sure you have a good ground on the voltage regulator.

Make sure you have a good ground on the voltage regulator.

i grounded  the generator to bolt that bolts the regulator to the fender ( even sanded the paint with emery cloth ). at the shop they even ran a ground from that bolt to the neg. side of the battery.

when the engine was off the tech touched the contact of the regulator  with a screw driver ..... the contact clicked / closed ( mine you the cover was off ) he thought that was weird ... we have tryed 2 different stock ( presto lite ) regulators and even a delco / remy regulator

after a week of the shop working on it,  it's not working right. the shop wants me to buy, either a used or new generator.

it's not charging the ampreres are getting past the circuit breaker and charging even when at idle. he claimed in 10  or 15 of driving the battery would be damaged. the regulator is non adjustable.

i wasn't able to find any good local units, and i was worried that if i did the result would be the same as before.

so he made me a deal. he returned all the parts that wouldn't fix my issues around 320$ worth and got me a gm 1 wire alt. also installed and wired. should be done thurs.so i'm out very little vs what it could have been.....

i called walcks and i plan to get a matched set ( gen and reg) from him when funds permit

i'm just happy to be on the road. been down scene july 4th :(

It was nice of that shop to take back the bad parts.  A non-adjustable regulator doesn't sound correct.  Hopefully, he can work with the alternator better.
