Title: Electric Wiper Motor Shaft Length

I'm replacing my '61 CJ5 vacuum wiper motor with this universal electric motor.

The shaft (the inner piece, the one that moves) is about 3 1/8 - 3 1/14 inches long.

installing at that length makes the shaft stick out absurdly far and does not allow me to remount my windshield-to-hood mounts. Inside the Jeep, I'd like to mount the motor directly to the windshield frame separated by a rubber washer.

I'm not afraid to cut the shaft, but I don't know what length to cut it.

I would appreciate your opinion about what the shaft length should be.

I remember a topic about this on our old forum.  It was for the vacuum wiper but the same issue of contacting the hood when w/s was down.  In that post, I suggested shimming behind the w/s to set the wiper motor further back (in effect shortening the shaft). 

Cutting the shaft will most likely be permanent.  If you do decide to cut, using the above shim technique could help you with measuring the right amount before permanently shortening the shaft.

Hi, Rus.

I’ve read the info on this subject on the “CJ-3B Specs and Tech Tips” page.

I practiced with a spacer, but I don’t like the way the motor protrudes into the cabin.

BTW, The wiper motors are at the top of the windshield.

I’ll reconnect the motor with the spacer and take a measurement of how long the shaft should be before I cut it.
