Title: getting new starter Using toyota fj40 starter but still want to use foot pedal

My 12v starter gave out on me and it has been to the re builder for almost a year so I want to use a Toyota fj40 starter (12v).  I want to continue to use the foot switch to start my '53 cj3b.  Do I wire directly to starter from the foot switch or do I go through the solenoid that is on the Toyota starter?

You need to use the Toyota solenoid.  Easy, if you have a simple on/off key switch, just run a wire  (14 ga should do it) from the “on” terminal of the switch to the foot switch, then on to the Toyota solenoid “s” terminal, battery cable to large Toyota terminal.  You will probably need large ring connectors for the foot switch.  Turn the key to on and hit the foot switch to activate the Toyota solenoid, good to go.

Do keep in mind the Toyota starter will only work with a 129 tooth ring gear in the later enclosed nose bell housing with the 6) 5/16" bolt holes on the sides. I have this setup on my 134L All I had to do was ream the top hole out about a 1/16" larger Diameter.

Or….  You could run the cables in the normal orientation, battery to foot switch and foot switch to starter solenoid batt cable connection. Then run a jumper from the solenoid’s batt cable post to the “S” post.
