Title: Do you carry an on-board bottle jack?
Post by: Mytwojeeps2020 on March 12, 2021, 06:01:31 PM
Just wondering what kind of a bottle jack you are carrying, if you are, for street tire changes. I have one of those big, honking “Jeep Jacks,” but don’t want to mount it on my new CJ. What I’m looking for is a bottle jack I can stow in the toolbox ) along with a wooden “plate” on which to mount it). BTW, I’m running 15” tires. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I don’t carry a bottle Jack. I carry a scissors jack. It weighs less, never leaks oil, and always works. Plus, at its retracted height it’s much shorter than a bottle jack. BW

I "quoted" 'cause neither posts were visible- in case others can't see.

Back when I got my jeep (1977), before all this network we have at our fingertips, I had no jack at all.  I purchased this bottle jack to carry with.  I had access to two scissors jacks at home but both were bigger than this.  So, at home the scissors jacks came out.  On the road this is what I used.  I have 15" tires and this lifts high enough.  I also carried a rock around for an emergency chock as well.

I was fortunate to never having to use it on soft ground.  A plate would be a good idea.

I have 20 ton bottle jack and carry a piece of plywood 12" x 12" , 2 - 4x4x12" and 2-2x4 1 foot long. I have a HI lift also 48 inches disassembled in the cab if I need it . It only takes a minute or two to put together.

Why do I have a 20 ton bottle jack ? I have several laying around  that I used to level house's with.

Any 2 to 20 ton bottle jack will work with a couple of pieces of wood. One day I will probably buy a smaller one but for now I use what I have.

I made a rack/tray behind the battery bracket bolted on the frame where I clamp down an Astro minivan scissors jack, the ratchet and lug wrench that came with it, and two angle iron pieces for tire chalks drilled and a bolt thru them.  No rattles or lose parts bouncing around.  I bolted a differential "bump stop" on the jack surface for 2" higher capacity and a cushion for my paint too.  I have 15" rims and use the spring mount plate position to jack it up at the wheel.  The plate is a good idea.  Now where to keep it?

I carry a bottle jack, a high lift jack and a shovel.  Many times it is better to dig out to fit the spare on than to raise the Jeep higher.

Or Plan C:

Forget buying either type jack and get a roadside assistance rider on my insurance!

How about both in one, a "screw bottle jack"...  (no connection, just found it an interesting compromise of OLD, and no fluid failures)
