Randomly, I'm still not seeing some posts. It isn't consistent so I haven't noticed a pattern of sorts. What I see is a post from a member but that post has not text. Then I notice a response from another member addressing that previous post - so that tells me it isn't blank.
Here's my latest example:
https://cj3apage.com/Forum/index.php?topic=4626.0
I see Pascal's welcome and then Matt has 2 posts below that. Each shows a time stamp where Matt went back and edited but nothing shows - no text, no images. Am I the only one? Is there anything that can be checked?
This issue (when it happens) causes me not to respond to posts and also makes it a little harder to follow those threads - unless another responds with a lot of detail where I can piece together what I couldn't see.
Frustrating.
-
It is possible that the unseen comments require an admin to review before they are seen by the group. I occasionally receive an email telling me there are comments to review. My guess is that one of the other admins is reviewing and authorizing before I see the request in my email folder. I have only authorized one of these requests. All the others I've opened had already been authorized by others.
-
Interesting insight. So far, I haven't gone back to some of those posts to check and see if they've become readable. This suggests that all would not be able to see, until the post has been approved. For me, I seem to be on the "outside" not able to read yet others can and reply - and that's when I find out the blank post actually has something there unseen by me. So, to help explain, I did go back and find just a few of those blank posts.
Examples:
https://cj3apage.com/Forum/index.php?topic=4621.0
See stony's post at 1:03 (blank). There's a response by BillT at 7:49.
https://cj3apage.com/Forum/index.php?topic=4559.0
First post by Jmarcum (blank). Two replys
https://cj3apage.com/Forum/index.php?topic=4380.0
stony's initial post (blank). Shows one "Like" and then a response by Bob W and then stony again. Then, once I knew what was being discussed, I could post. Oddly, stony posts after my response - and that post is blank too.
https://cj3apage.com/Forum/index.php?topic=4455.0
Final post by GunnersWillys (blank).
This is what I'm describing. I assume that if no one could see, then others would post about not seeing also.
-
Yes, interesting -- I see what you're talking about, Rus. But I have no understanding of what goes on under the hood, here at the forum. We may need Pascal to sort this out.
Derek

Seems like I am seeing all the "blank" posts.
-
I'm seeing the content in all of those posts. Is it possible that you have something set to "block" some posts in your personal settings?
Hopefully Pascal will chime in soon.
-
I too see all the posts with no issues.
-
That at least confirms something is not right - thank y'all for confirming. I don't believe I've selected (or not selected) that would cause this. I haven't selected anyone to be on a "hate list"
I had a profile reset a while back but this seems random. It would be nice to figure this out!
-
It happens to me twice under this post.
https://cj3apage.com/Forum/index.php?topic=4650.0
I cannot see some of Oldtime's posts
-
That's exactly what I was attempting to emphasize. I never thought to do a screen capture.
-
It happens now with one PM from Oldtime. Screen capture attached
-
I’m and still working on it.
-
Blank, I am starting to believe it is my computer... Will try my wife's
-
Nope! Not you. I'm blank also. Because I see this blank post often but random, I don' t reply 'cause I don't know if it's just me or it affects others. Pascal's post is blank for me too.
-
It's possible that this problem has something in common with the problem we had with the SQL server.
I will follow it.
-
one's and zero's confuse me. Good luck Pascal - hopefully you can find something.
-
There was a guest post in the For Sale forum, titled "One Owner, Original 1963 Willys CJ-3B" which did not appear to have any content, so I moved it to the Recycle section, where it is now the top post.
Maybe others would want to take a look at this post and see if it's an example of this problem, or whether it is just a blank post.
Derek
-
Derek,
I've searched and can't find "recycle" - I even used the "search" box and saw several posts stating items moved to "recycle" with links. I clicked on the link and got a message stating the item is not available or I don't have permission.
Could recycle be a Moderator function only?
Maybe everyone else can see it but me! lol
-
Yep, recycle is visible only for admin.
I moved back the post that you mention Derek since i see It. There is content to this post.
-
OK, thanks. It's still blank for me.
Rus, sorry to cause confusion!
Derek
-
I think all of this helps. That add is also blank for me too.
-
I can see the content in the CJ-3B for sale post. Sure does look like a nice original CJ-3B!!!
-
I still can’t see Oldtime’s post. They all look blank. And this it indeed terrible! I am not getting info from an expert!
-
I too am now having this "blank post" issue, and I never had it before this past week. It happens in both Chrome and Firefox, though I have no idea if that is relevant.
Admin...is there a fix in site? Or is the issue on my end?
-
Maybe I missed it...what is the consensus on why this is happening and can it be repaired?
-
We're all still waiting. I suspect sometimes, these things fix without doing much. Other times, it takes a lot of digging to find out if it's just one problem or several different issues that all look alike.
In the mean time, when I encounter these blank posts, I just sit and wait to see if there's another post afterwards that will help me "fill in the blanks" in hopes that I can follow along. Sometimes I can't.
-
I'm just wondering out loud if "when you joined the site" has anything to do with the "experiences". It seems newbies like myself are not having issues seeing the posts. Some kind of "membership transfer link" issue maybe?
-
Just to add to the mystery...
When I view the new thread about the $2000 project, I can't see the comments while I'm logged in to the site. If I log out of the site, then view the thread, I can see the comments.
I have no idea how to fix this issue.
-
I had wondered if there was a connection between using a PC (me) and others using a mobile device.
Hawk, I'm trying your tweak. Logging out to see if posts are visible...
-
Wow!
I just had to get back on and make another post! athawk11's mention of logging off worked! I went through this entire thread clicking on all threads that had blank posts mentioned - including the $2000 project mentioned by hawk (it was all blank to me after the photos).
ALL POSTS WERE VISIBLE WHEN LOGGED OUT AND VIEWING AS A GUEST!!
To me this narrows it down just a bit. Thank you hawk for that suggestion!
Added: Might as well mention this too. Each link that I clicked on to verify the posts were visible (as a guest) I left those tabs open. Then after logging back in, I went to those tabs and noticed they all showed as "guest" with me not logged in and the posts were still visible. I then "refreshed" each tab to see if the posts would stay visible but as soon as each tab refreshed, showing me as logged in, those same posts went blank again......
-
What Steve mentioned makes a lot of sense to me. New users or guest users, by the way, are not being impacted by this bug. It seems to be only with some "old" users. It does happen to me.
Rus, let me share some more IT details to explain what happened when you refreshed the page and you were then logged-in in all tabs.
Web browsers manage the access to a given site as A session. You can open multiple tabs as Guest and they are all the same session, just different screens. When you log-in in one tab, a new session is open in that screen. All open tabs are like a picture of that you last did in that tab and will keep unchanged. If you refresh a given tab, the browser will notice there is one new session that you recently opened in one of the tabs. Hence all tabs will show the "new picture" under this username session.
Since the bug is affecting "old" users and you just logged-in then post disappeared.
Does this help to understand what had happened with your tabs?
Cheers!
Chris

When viewing in the "guest mode", have you tried to post comments? I wouldn't think you would be able to without logging in as a "member", also to show your "signature" as it does on other topics. FYI, I've designated as "always logged in on my profile, so there is no logged out status removal possibly. When you log out of "guest", you go back to beginning "status' possibly. Just thinking out loud some. I'm not computer savvy by any stretch of the imagination. I really appreciate all the time administrators have to put in to maintain this site. Thanks!

Yes, I follow all that. That's exactly why I refreshed to see if the old "picture" would remain or update - recognizing I'm "logged in" - and it did, making those newly visible posts disappear again. I provided that detail in hopes smarter people than me can go in and see what may be causing the missing posts to only appear when logged out vs. registered members.
-
Testing post logged out. Note says it will not display until approved.
Rus Curtis
-
Additionally, I just posted as "guest" to see what that looks like. May take a while to see it - requires approval.
-
It's a very busy time for me right now but I didn't forget you and I will look for a solution as soon as I can.
Sorry for the delay.
-
Hey Pascal, we know your busy! We're just batting around ideas in hopes that it might be useful when the time comes!
For me, at least there's a way to see the posts until then!
-
There is a new guest post awaiting approval, at https://cj3apage.com/Forum/index.php?topic=4802.msg37913#msg37913
To me it is blank, so I hesitate to approve it. But If I log out I won't be able to see the post at all because it hasn't been approved.
Maybe another moderator can try.

Keeps me nimble..... log out read. copy. log in. "quote" paste. then respond....
Good times..

Ok I'm looking at this again.
I checked the members permissions and it seem to be the same for all users.
I know that we are running SMF forum version 2.0.17 and there is 2 new versions for it: 2.0.18 or the new release 2.1.3.
I will consider to upgrade the forum to 2.1.3 and see if it make any changes or improve.
I'm also looking for help with smf support.
I'll let you know.
-
Ok, SMF support said that it might be a MOD that can cause this so I will remove the MOD for the Like red button (the last one installed) and some others MOD that affect post.
Is it just from posts where the member doesn't have avatar? Or a broken one?
-
Hi Pascal! No, the problem will happen with a member who has a good avatar. Example:

Hi Rus,
I'm investigating the long-standing issue where some members occasionally see blank posts while logged in.
I've made a small change on my end that may or may not be related. Could you please do the following when you have a chance?
Log completely out of the forum.
Close your browser tab (or browser if possible).
Open the forum again and log back in.
Go back to this topic:
https://cj3apage.com/Forum/index.php?topic=4626.0
Let me know if you can now see all of mstokes' posts, or if any of them are still blank.
If the issue is still present, could you also tell me:
Which browser you're using (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, etc.).
Whether you're on Windows, Mac, iPad, Android, etc.
If possible, take a screenshot of one of the blank posts.
Thanks for helping track this down. It's been a tricky issue because only a few members seem to experience it.
-
Pascal,
I went a step further. Not only did I check for your request, but I went back and searched for my posts where I wrote, "Copy/paste so I can read" on all the posts where it was invisible to me to check those also.
The post you asked about mstoke's posts - all are visible.
All the other posts where they didn't show and I had to log out, copy, log back in, quote the author, paste just to read - all visible now.
This is really, really great!!
-
That's excellent news!
It looks like the change fixed the issue for your account. Since this problem has only affected a small number of members over the years, I'm not ready to declare victory just yet, but this is a very encouraging result.
The next step is to see if the same fix works for the other members who have reported the problem in the past. If it does, we may have finally tracked down a bug that's been around for years.
Thank you very much for taking the time to test not only the thread I mentioned, but also all the older posts where you previously had to use the copy/paste workaround. That was extremely helpful.
-
Thanks, Pascal. As far as I can see, all posts are now visible to me also. That's a big problem solved by the move to the new host.
