Title: Leaky oil pan

Replacing a leaky oil pan gasket. Got the surface flat and clean. Using a cork gasket. What sealer should I use.  Some said none, some said #2 avionics  permatex.  I live in Yuma. Much heat and vibration. Thanks.

I stopped using the cork version a few gaskets ago.  I tend to over-tighten the mounting bolts, which causes the gasket to deform and squish out (especially when I added a bit of sealant).
 
If I were to use the cork style gasket, I would probably do it dry.  This would increase the friction between the gasket and flanges…and hopefully reduce the squish out.

  X2, what Hawk said. The first most common mistake made when installing a pan gasket (cork or other) is slathering it in silicone sealer. All it does is lubricate the gasket and make it want to squish out. As does any sealer on cork. The second mistake is overtightening, either at the beginning, or when trying to stop the ensuing leak. I watch the edge of the gasket as I tighten the bolts, and when I see it start to squish, STOP! That is actually tighter than I really want it, but I know of no other sign. I use this method, cork or not.  BW
