Title: Serial Number database-please add your jeep.
Post by: F Bill on December 18, 2012, 12:08:45 PM
Hi guys...

Pascal, QuebecJeep here on the 3A page, is doing a super job of updating our old serial number database you can find on the front page of our site.. If you click on the Roberto Flores picture or the 3A PAGE right next to it, it will take you to the home page, where there is a button top and center for the serial number list. The main use for this is for research, and for guys who are attempting to find the correct engine number range for their own 3A.

If you don't mind, the more jeeps we have on the list the more accurate guesses can be made for the correct numbers on a jeep, so please add any 3A jeeps you own.

Here is a cut and paste from Pascal's post on the newbie forum.

If you want to be listed in our serial number database (http://cj3apage.com/Serial%20Numbers.htm) , please send me your information by email (pascal.lavoie.pl@gmail.com) or PM me.(QuebecJeep)

 Information needed:
Year
Serial Number
Engine Serial Number
Details
Owner Name
Location
Email

You have a picture! Great! Send it as well.
It should be in jpg format with a size less than 1 Meg.

It would be great if you can name it like this:
year-model-ownerfirstname-ownerlastname-serialnumber.jpg

 example: 1950-CJ3A-Pascal-Lavoie-56908.jpg

 Thanks

We appreciate your taking time to add your own jeep and the appropriate numbers and picture. :)

Hi Bill,
Just a recommendation.  Send all your information directly to Pascal's email.

pascal.lavoie.pl@gmail.com

He is our only active administrator, but he doesn't check in here everyday.  I believe he checks his email regularly.

Yes
At the moment Pascal (Quebec Jeep) is the only one of us Admins who knows how to access the database. Since Bill had to bow out, we're running on Pascal's know-how.
Many thanks to you Pascal.

I would like to add the serial number of my 1951 CJ3A to the database, but I'm not sure if I know the correct entry.  There is a serial number plate in the engine compartment, installed in the correct location, but the number does not fit with any of the numbers in the database.  The last 6 digits are also copied in the engine block serial number, .

Serial number plate on firewall:  451-GB1 3J101484
Number stamped on engine block:  3J101484

The number from the plate on the firewall has been used as the VIN on the title.  The title is clean and clear.  The vehicle was first registered in California in July 1951, and the title shows that the list price was $421 (?!).  It is now in Arizona.

In 1951 the state of California used the engine serial number as the "VIN" for the title. This was very common in many states in the 'good old days'. Since then someone has replaced the original Patent Plate with a reproduction patent plate that was stamped to match the title.

That does seem like the most reasonable explanation.  I couldn't find any on-line vendors that sell that type of Patent Plate, but someone apparently does (or did).  So, it appears that there is no way to find the original, correct, serial number.

Are the frames not stamped like the 3B's?

The frame stamping did not begin until 1953. I have never seen a CJ-3A frame that was stamped. I suspect the very first CJ-3Bs didn't have frame stamps either. More data is needed to determine the exact starting point of the stampings.

I noticed that the serial number page does not get updated.  I sent information to Pascal a long time ago for mine but I am sure he has many other things directing efforts elsewhere.  Not sure if the site admins would be open to some outside help but I used to administer the site my club had (before we closed it down a couple years ago due to dwindling funds).  If someone wanted help with getting this database page updated I would be glad to take up the charge.  I looked at the code for the page and it is really simple; it looks like the back end of the site (not the forum) would be pretty easy to administrate and update.
