Title: 3a exhaust vs MB style?
Post by: Kyle on August 31, 2018, 02:20:00 AM
any opinions on MB, GPW style passenger exit exhaust benefits and drawbacks vs the straighter cj3a exhaust?  Was thinking about crossing my exhaust over under the bellhousing to the passenger side to get it away from my fuel and brake lines and my clutch linkage and exit under the passenger seat like a WWII jeep...  and it would be away from my fuel tank which is now a plastic style reproduction...

The 3A style exhaust is a little more protected against damage than the MB/GPW style.  If you rock-crawl, I would leave it a 3A style. There is also a greater chance of getting burned by the MB/GPW exhaust.

I've seen where those guys on youtube have smashed the mufflers on rocks out West with the passenger side exit, which is a down side.  Probably doesn't help the tub either.

I know some of those crazy guys. Jeff Petrovich (JPet on the forums) has crushed that muffler almost beyond recognition. He is who I was thinking about after reading your post.

What you're thinking of doing is perfectly reasonable, but I don't think the exhaust in its current position would ever get hot enough to melt your tank. If you're worried, you could attached some modern style shield plates between the tank and exhaust. That would probably be cheaper than a new MB style system.

If you do the modification, let us know how it goes and how it turns out.

got my MB style pipe on!  I am happy with it, thinking of using a small diameter muffler like a glasspack or a old tractor style instead of the larger MB or GPW mufflers so that it is up and out of the way more... however my throw-out bearing carrier spring broke or came off so I am pulling my engine!!!
