[size=14]I have a new gauge and new sending unit. It does not register how much fuel I have in the tank. When I take the sending unit out of the tank and leave it wired, I move the float arm manually it registers on the gauge. Any suggestions or trouble shooting tips or videos, please[/size]

Make sure the sending unit is properly grounded.
You may need to run a separate wire from the sending unit to a good ground on the tub....

Cool Jeep. GPW or MB?
A lot of us do what 1955CJ-5 suggests. An extra ground wire can help.
Is the float getting caught on the internal tank baffle? I don't know if this is possible though. I think the screws holding the sending unit to the tank will only line up a certain way.

I just went through this exercise last night, my sending unit worked just fine for the last couple years and then I had an out of jeep experience that burned up my wiring harness. None of the re-wiring work was on the sending unit or gauge but apparently it was close enough to offend the sending unit. I ended up doing the same as you, pulling the sender, and verifying the electrical connections and function, all was good until I started tightening the screws that hold the sender to the tank. When I tightened the last one it put enough torque on the sending unit head to bend the head it in some way. I ended up rotating the whole unit 180 degrees, re-inserting the sender with the float pointed to the driver side of the vehicle, then all of the screws went in straight and clean and the unit worked just fine. Really weird.

That is one clean looking tank! Did you end up just replacing the tank or did you restore it? I am looking to reuse the tank I already have but am wondering what the best steps are to clean out the tank...inside and out.

I think you are right Hawk, I found that the screws go in a lot easier if the sender is oriented so that the float is toward the driver side, however it I was able to get the screws in with the sender pointed to the pass side. The margin of error is small enough that it is easy to be convinced that it is in correctly when its not.

It looks like the back side of your tank is a 1/2in off the floor, is that normal or did you do that so the spout would center for the grommet ? I had to raise mine 3/4 to get to center spout. Al

Hi Al,
The tank sits on the floor and was centered on the filler grommet. The bracket/clip just didn't reach floor. The tank and bracket are reproductions. Either the clip or the tank...or both are probably not exactly correct reproductions.
My green Willys had an original tank and clip. No spacer was needed. I ended up replacing the tank. Once I did, I needed to add two washers under the clip.

Hi, when I took my tank out, it fit and centered the hole in the tub, to the best I can remember. When put tank back in, the spout was setting on the bottom of the gas spout opening.So I rised the tank up with wood strips until sprout was centered.I just hope it does'nt interfere with new seats. Al
