Title: clutch rod length?
Post by: aboyandhisdog on August 24, 2017, 11:16:54 AM
Can anybody tell me the proper length of an OE style clutch rod?  The on-center length would be most helpful.  Thanks.

I got 10 3/8" on center.......on my back, with a tape measure....but I think it's pretty accurate..:)

You know, when I yanked out the old (homemade) rod, the ends were worn down by about 1/3 the diameter.  I'm really glad I found it before it failed on the road.  I made the clevis end rod with 3/8 rod and clevis's from Ace and cut the threads at 3/8 by 24tpi.  With the 10 3/8 measurement you gave me, it basically puts the cross shaft connections in a vertical position and the clutch cable fits correctly.  Factory fresh!

Nice!

On my 55 CJ-5 the rod was like that, nearly worn to the point of breaking...

On the CJ-3a the hole in the cross-shaft crank was severely elongated...

You wonder at that design for something that gets lots of use....

I bought some 5/16 fine thread clevis ends and will use 5/16 rod, when i finally remember to buy some....

Finally made a clevis end rod for the CJ-5 clutch. I shortened it just a little to make up for the elongated holes in the bell cranks...they need to come out some day for repair..

The 3a also needs a new rod, but I repaired the bell cranks when they were out....

Before and after welding, just need to round out the hole....
