Will a starter from a cj3B from a hurricane motor work with a CJ3A flywheel ?
It looks like the picture attached.
It is a 9 tooth starter.

Unlikely. I'm pretty sure the 3B has a 129T flywheel and the 3A has a 124T. Hopefully those more knowledgeable that I will weigh in.
Oddly, the pinion on most all of the starters (except maybe the really early ones) have 9 teeth even though the flywheels are different.

I'm almost certain it will work depending on your bellhouse!
There are 3 different flywheels. Very early CJ3a's and MB's, CJ2a's have a 97-Tooth flywheel which takes the 10-tooth starter, these mount differently in the bellhousing (also different) and the metal plate between the engine and flywheel is different to, they will not match.
And then there are the 124 or 129-tooth which both take the 9-tooth starter. The 9 tooth starter is the same in both 3A and 3B, available in 6 volt, 12 volt or 24 volt. The Cj3a and Cj3b both have the same bellhouse and the "closed nose" type starter can be exchanged as far as i am aware.

Late to the party here: I am dealing with this now, as i have a 51 3A w/ a 3B motor. Starter went out, want to upgrade to key-start and hi-torque starter.
I found this pic on the web, which clearly shows the different types of flywheels...and you shouldn't have to pull the motor to count teeth!
