Title: wiring question
Post by: specialty on May 16, 2016, 10:32:32 PM
I have 2 tail lamps with 1157 bulbs. i want to run tail lights, brake and signal off the same 2 filament bulb. Anyone know where I can get a good diagram to hook up the signals? I can do the tail and brake with no problem but not sure about how to get the turn to work. thanks

Maybe this will help?

I guess first I need to get the signal light switch. Can the rear lights flash using single 1157 bulbs while still having tail and stop lights? I think somehow the signal light is wired in with the stop light and cancels the stop when turned on? I have a single 1157 bulb in each tail light on my 3A and was thinking to make things much more simple I could install another socket for another smaller bulb in each housing for the signal purpose. Does this make sense or am I over reacting?

I have signals on my 55 CJ-5 and it uses the single dual-filament bulb in the tail lights...I'm not sure whether it uses the stop light filament or the tail light filament as the signal...but I wired it as shown in the diagram and it works...

I'd have to go look but I think my switch is a Signal-Stat 900..

My new wiring harness with a provision for turn signals came with a separate brake light wire for each side.  The turn signal switch can then use the brake light for either braking or signaling.  It uses the standard 1157 bulb.

I am doing my own harness since it fairly simple other than the rear signals using a 1157 bulb. I thought about making up another socket and spot weld it in the light housing but since it will work I just need to do it. However I did run 4 wires back to my tail lights in case I needed more wires to make it work. I think once I get the signal switch it will see have the provisions to accomplish that.

Thanks

The brake and the flashing signal use the same filament in the 1157 bulb.

When at a stop light with brake pedal pushed, and with the left turn signal flashing, your driver side will be using the filament to signal the turn and the passenger tail light will be using the filament for the bright steady brake light mode.

The running lights use the other filament in the 1157 bulb.

This is why you don't need separate bulbs.  The function is built into the dual filament bulb.

A flasher module is needed in the equation to make all of this work.

Hope this helps.

problem solved. When I got the turn signal switch it makes it easy. thanks
