Title: Spare tire mounting dimensions
Post by: macrisel on December 20, 2010, 10:32:49 AM
Does anyone have the measurements of the hole locations for the spare tire carrier?  I'm getting ready to drill them in my new tub and would like to put them in the correct spot the first time.  ;D

Do the holes pass through the brace in the wheel well or just all around it?  Also, I'm thinking about adding a thicker plate behind the holes to bolt through.  Opinions?

This should help:

Be sure to also click on the links near the bottom of the article for additional pics underneath the fender. Also click on the link for the vibration dampener. See that little black thing above the wheel opening?

macrisel, The info Larry supplied is right on.  It always is. Thanks, Larry.
When I was installing my MD Juan tub on my restoration project (that's a whole nuther story >:() I saw that the brace in the fenderwell was so poorly made and poorly welded in place that I cut it out, cut the original out of my original tub and rewelded the original into the new tub.  The main reason was that the new one in the MD Juan tub had such narrow flanges that there was too little material against the outer quarter panel (where the tire bracket mounts) to allow proper edge distance and clamp up.  Like you stated above, I too, added more material inside the fenderwell to reinforce the mounting of the spare tire bracket.  However, if you're just making a show Jeep or a garage queen it wouldn't really matter.  But, if you're going to do any four-wheeling in rough country, the spare tire will likely take a hit.  I've had a few Jeeps in my early days and I always relocated my spare to the rear.  I was planning on doing the same with my present Jeep, but since it had never been altered in 60 years, I chose not to alter it now.  So I restored it with the 6 volt electrical, single vacuum windshield wiper, single tail light, etc.

That is really the route that I'm going with my Jeep.  I have plenty of other "toys" to go out and tear up on the trails, track and streets.  I have done several projects in the past, but I wanted to do a (mostly) original frame off restoration.  While I doubt I have a 100 point car, it should be one that will last for many more years!

Even with that being said, I'll probably add the extra bracing for the spare tire.  Better safe than sorry.

Hi everybody. The spare wheel support is missing on my Jeep. Where is it possible to buy it? I am in France!  :-/

The fixing holes are missing: position, size ... for installation on passanger side?

Thanks

I do not have the exact measurements.

But, if you still have the inner fender brace and short hat channel that is located inside the fender, the holes ought to be there when looking from the inside.

The spare tire bracket mounts with four bolts, two go through the large stamped baffle, and two go through the "hat" channel...

Sorry I don't have better pictures....
