Title: New Manifolds - Trouble aligning
Post by: ChrisD on December 05, 2015, 04:11:23 PM
Guys, I have new intake and exhaust manifolds that I am trying to install on my 1950 CJ3A. The manifolds will not align flat to the block once I bolt them together. I have already cracked one intake manifold because I did not check it before bolting it up.

Is there a trick I am missing??

Thanks,
Chris

There are 4 bolts where the intake and exhaust bolt together with a gasket. Can you loosen them and then bolt the pair up flat on the engine, then tighten the 4 ?  Also where the two bridge on the lower bolt line, a heavy thick washer is used there. If this fails, then you need to have the surface planed or milled. John

John, thanks - I did not know about the thick washer. I will loosen the bolts and see if I can bolt up to the engine. I will probably be visiting the machine shop this week to get it planed.

Took the manifolds to my local machine shop. They had to drill out the holes where they bolt together and then re-surfaced it flat.
