Title: Cross member bell crank location
Post by: Linda on August 23, 2015, 07:59:37 PM: Hi I just purchased a 1951 cj3a the serial number says it was made in mid 1951. But the bell crank is located on the front cross member. So does it have the wrong frame? Any help would be appreciated

Consistently through 3A production, the bell crank is attached to the bell crank bracket located on the front tubular cross member.

Post a photo of your frame/Willys. We will help confirm what you have.

Kirkski makes an interesting observation...

A Lefty style Willys was a short lived production decision to move the spare tire mount to the driver side. This is where your spare is mounted.ï¿½ The problem is, to my knowledge, there is no such thing as a CJ-3A Lefty.ï¿½ A Lefty is exclusive to the CJ-2A during 1948 production.ï¿½ About 9,700 Lefties were made.

So, you may have a 1948 CJ-2A with a 3A style windshield, or you have a 3A and a previous owner moved your spare to the driver side.

Some additional photos will help determine what's going on.ï¿½

Post by: Linda on September 21, 2015, 08:32:17 PM: Hi, sorry it took so long to reply, After further research I looked up the serial # and it was built in mid 51. ALso I noticed bondo on the right side where it was damaged. I think that's way someone moved it to the left side. Thanks for your help.Its nice to have a place to get good help.
