My newly aquired 3A is running well except for 3rd gear. With my foot down it will pop out evry few seconds, no willingness to stay in there.
I read that popping out of 2nd gear is common.
Any ideas?

My only idea is that maybe it isn't going into third all the way...does it feel like the shift lever is making a nice positive click into third?
Third is just a collar that connects the main drive gear to the main shaft giving a 1:1 ratio, so there really aren't any gears involved, but there is a syncro ring...

Popping out of 3rd is unusual. The spring and poppet ball in the shift tower might be my first move.

Look at the drive dogs. They are the small pyramid shaped points that the brass syncroniser lines up with. If they are tapered more on one side, it will act like a slide and throw it out of gear. Your synchroniser collar will also be bad. Check that the shift fork isn't loose and not putting it all the way into gear. And--- a weak poppet ball spring like Hawky said. John

Thanks for the ideas, I will take it out in the next few weeks and have a look.
It is going into 3rd but the action is not exactly rifle like and then it does not like to stay there. I am hoping it is a missing or broken poppet ball as it looks an easy fix with the top off.
In the meantime I have bought a small parts kit from Walcke's for the T90 as it has lots of bits including the poppet balls and was only 26 bucks. As i was buying most of the emergency brake parts it was only a little extra on the bill.
I am quite looking forward to getting it apart!!

mine makes an unmistakable click-click when going into third...
With any luck it is just in the tower.
There are a couple of articles under Tech tips on the home page if you haven't already read them.
I think the T-90 and D-18 were fun rebuilds.

If you pull up on the shifter cane in neutral and twist it 90 degrees, you can access the poppet balls and springs when you remove the shifter fork rivit. I put in a new roll pin in the fork, and then put a safety wire through the pin. You can also put a small washer under the poppet ball spring to boost that up also. Mine was jumping out of gear. All else was new, Fixed it. US made quality parts are so nice compared to Omix Ada parts. Avoid those. John
