Title: spare tire carrier
Post by: terryb on January 11, 2015, 01:09:56 PM: hello gentalman, im thinking about adding a spare tire to my 3a but do not want it mounted on the side. i want to mount it on the rear. i am hoping someone can post some pics. of the tire mount and the diminsions of it. i would like to see if i can build one first before buying one.

Post by: Ryan_M on January 11, 2015, 01:23:00 PM: Be aware that if you mount the spare on the tailgate you may want to add some reinforcement as stock 3A tailgates were not designed to withstand that extra weight. It's pretty easy to do.

So this carrier is mounted on the passenger side with these brackets, the bottom one has threaded rod welded to it to connect it to the roll bar mount inside the wheel well. The top has a backing plate.

This is the inside, I basically cut off the outside loop of the carrier

Overall it turned out fine. I would lower the tire on the carrier if I did it over. But ultimately the tire -just- squeaks by the winch, so it worked out in the end.

Hopefully this gives you some ideas. Not the most pro job but it has worked for the last 5 years. 8-)

You mentioned it was a Junk yard pull, what vehicle did you pull it from, looks like it was made to fit.

Terry, another option would be the tire carrier from an M38 jeep, you can buy these over the counter at Military Vehicle suppliers like Midwest Military. They will mount right on the tailgate however you should put some reinforcement on the gate. I think one of the guys here modified his 3a gate to take the extra load, it was just a couple of small angles if I remember.

The fuel can bracket reinforcement is a couple of "T" shaped pieces welded on. This particular tailgate has another plate reinforcement in the center. No idea what that was for. Probably a Bubba mod.

I think I took my carrier from a nissan pathfinder (?) I cut a good foot off the end where it attaches to the tailgate.

Post by: terryb on January 21, 2015, 09:07:49 AM: A big thank you to all. i get alot of great info from you guys and sometimes a good laugh. alot of good natured ribbing goes on sometimes. i have seen the m38 carrier on some web sites and their alittle salty in price. id like to build one since i have access to some scrap metal. if someone has the m38 tire carrier if you could post a pic or drawing with the measurements that would be great. if not i'll just get to cutting and welding and see what i come up with.

Post by: BMIC on January 29, 2015, 07:09:50 AM: I picked up this tire carrier from the KW catalog, the top two holes matched but I had to drill the bottom two. As it turns out a 16" x 700 NDT will not fit as it hits the bumperette. I may have to modify the tire carrier to Ryan's design.

John Bizal at Midwest Military (great guy, great parts) sells the upper and lower brackets separately. You might be able to use the upper that you already have with John's lower.

The mounting requirements for one of these is a little convoluted so you'll need to figure out what you need for spacers and other hardware to make it work. I think MWM carries the spacer set too.
