Title: Front Frame Repair
Post by: JohnR on March 20, 2014, 09:03:25 AM: Hi Guys
I am in the process of doing some frame repairs, including making new inner boxing portions behind the front crossmember, and was hoping someone had some pictures of the inside and outside of their stock frame. I guess I need to know what holes are stock and what have been added over the years. My body is old aftermarket, so I am not sure which holes are required for toe board brackets and fender braces etc. in a stock application. Pictures and any input appreciated.

Post by: athawk11 on March 21, 2014, 11:28:32 AM: The inner boxing on a 3A is a little complex.ï¿½ Are you replacing all of it, or just some of the stuff just behind the tube shaped crossmember?

I donï¿½t know how much these photos will help.ï¿½ There are some holes that donï¿½t belong on the rusty images, but they do show the shape of the inner boxing.ï¿½ Well, sort of.ï¿½They really are rough.

The black frame has the right holes in the right place for fenders, steering, etc, but they donï¿½t show up very well in the photos I have.ï¿½

The pictures of the green frame show mounting locations pretty well.ï¿½ The holes with bolts in them are mostly fender bolt locations.ï¿½ This was my first Willys, so there may be some holes that don't belong.ï¿½ The photo with read arrows shows where the side steps would be mounted, if I had some.ï¿½ The square headed bolt is where the 'ground' from the engine to the frame.

I may be able to shoot some better stuff this weekend if you think it could help.ï¿½ It may be easier to get you some shots of the assembled Willys and the holes that are filled with bolts holding components in place.

Those pics help a lot!.ï¿½ Given our weather here in Upper Michigan, my project is on hold till spring.ï¿½ Did a days worth of cutting and welding about a month ago, and I really need to take this project outside due to the smoke and fire hazard.ï¿½ Looks like I'll be picking up a few parts jeeps this spring also, so I should have a comparison.ï¿½ I've been taking pictures, and will post when I am done.ï¿½ "athawk11", do you have a link to your green ODie build?ï¿½ I searched here and the 2A forum, and can't find anything.ï¿½ Great job!

Post by: JohnR on March 22, 2014, 10:37:10 AM: BTW, athawk11, I am replacing all of it on both sides with 1/8" plate.ï¿½ I was hoping to eliminate any unnecessary holes, and weld capture nuts in the places that will need anything mounted.ï¿½ I'm also thinking of possibly putting a piece above each rear spring hanger, and boxing from the front crossmember to the bumper area in prep for a future winch mount.ï¿½ My hopes of an original resto are out the window on this one due to the hodge podge of parts, so I'm going to build it with the intent of using it for hunting and fishing with my boys.ï¿½ I can do an original style resto with the next one.

The more recent photos get a little convoluted, but if you go to the earlier stuff, you'll see the progress.

I have tons more photos of it during the build, but I doubt people here would be interested in a retrospect rebuild thread.

Let me know if and when you want some detailed photos of the frame and mount positions.
