While I have this on jack stands I figured I might as well flush out the trans, transfer case and differentials.
I intend to pull the differential covers and replace the gaskets and clean them up a bit anyway.
My question--- is it safe to flush all of them with kerosene or would a light motor oil be ok?
My Forum search nover oulls up any results when I search for flush or flushing.

Kerosene would be fine, just don't use them under load. when they are full of kerosene. Putting it up on jack stands and letting it spin for a couple minutes should not harm anything and might help get it cleaner. Mineral spirits also would work. Drain well, preferably overnight. If you have the top cover off the tranny you can also use spray cleaners when you are finished with the pre cleaning.
Save the drainings once you flush it and let it settle, then reuse it to clean up what you can reach with a parts cleaning brush. If you have a parts washer just use whatever fluid is in that. If you don't have a parts washer you should have plenty of kerosene for cleaning with when you are done.

I put #2 oil and ATF (one of my favorite mixes!) in the tranny, tcase and diffs of my '49 and drove it around the parking lot a couple times to flush them out. That worked pretty well. My transmission had lots of water in it and a nasty mix of water and oil. The poor thing couldn't move when it got real cold it was so froze up. The goop that was in there didn't even drain out it was so stiff. By adding the #2 oil/ATF, it mixed it up and thinned it out. I had to do the treatment 3 times.
I use the #2 oil or diesel and ATF mix for many things. Works excellent as a penetrating oil, degreaser and parts washer. I think it even smells kinda good. :o

Nate what was the ratio of #2 to ATF?
(I'm learning that the mix is kinda important :P )

50/50

I filled them with kerosene and let it run for a few minutes then drained. The front diff has a tag with a 43 over an 8 but I can't find anything on the rear differential.
Here is a picture of the rear with the cover off.
Can anyone tell me what I have? Both front & rear?
Thanks.

Hi Steve,
The axle in the photo is a Dana 41. Your front is probably a Dana 25.

The tag you have (43 over 8) refers to gear ratio. 5.37 gears

Excuse my ignorance but how does that translate? 43 over 8 to 5.37?

43 ring gear teeth divided by 8 pinion teeth is 5.37.....

If I take a picture with the cover on will you be able to identify it or should I remove the cover and take a photo?
-
...or drive shaft revolves 5.38 times to one revolution of the wheel.
Aahhhh,
...43 divided by 8 equals 5.375 and rounded up, equals 5.38

Pic of front Diff. Is this a 25?
-
It looks like it is. The diff cover is more telling. Is there a breather on the cover?
-
Yes, it has a breather.
-
Yeah, then it is a D25.
