Title: Two questions from a newbie...
Post by: PeterL on January 29, 2014, 06:11:52 PM: I am just beginning my journey into the CJ3 world. As I was photo documenting the unit before tearing the jeep down and came across these... What the heck are they?

Second question, once sandblasted is it likely this frame will be OK? Or do I need to look into trying to find one?

Post by: garage gnome on January 29, 2014, 07:46:11 PM: Its hard to say about the frame until you start sand blasting it. I would smack it good with a hammer before had and try to get the scale off. My '53 had some bad rust, but it came out ok. the rear is pitted, but it doesn't hurt it.

I think that stuff on the front is either for a plow OR the frame broke somewhere up there (common on the 2As, but not very on the 3As) and someone "repaired" it. I see some more boogered up metal by the front bumper, so just take a good hard look for cracks.

My '53s frame. I had to replace the rear crossmember and the one right behind the transmission. I had a junk frame that still had a good one. I bought a new rear one.

I haven't seen that frame mod before.ï¿½ Damaged frame repair or plow Jeep mod are both good guesses.ï¿½ It's just a strange place for a 3A frame mod.ï¿½ Plow jeeps usually get beefed up more toward the front frame horns, and this is the strongest area on the 3A frame, so it's not likely to break here.ï¿½

As Nate mentions, a 3A frame is made much stronger than a 2A.ï¿½ Even with the heavy pitting, it is probably salvageable, but I would give it a few good whacks with a hammer prior to paying for the sandblast work.ï¿½

Also, depending on your welding skills, anything can be fixed.
