I pulled this starter of my M38. The tag is gone but it's marked "PS3111". I can't find anything conclusive enough in my web searches to know what it is. I also don't know a lot about starters in general. An M38 was originally 24V. Mine is now 12V. Aren't these starters voltage specific? Or can you keep the same starter at 6, 12, or 24V?
This one has a couple holes where either a solenoid was mounted or could have been mounted. There is no band around the rear. Should there be? I'm trying to figure out what this is and if it's likely to be original.

Ryan, I know you can use a 12v system with a 6v starter, but I don't think a 12v system could deliver enough power to a 24v starter. Does the starter turn strong, as is? If so, it's probably a 12v starter.
That said, I don't what you have. It doesn't look anything like the starters I have.

I agree with Tim in that a 24v probably wouldn't work in a 12v system. In addition, I've heard that starter work and it spins the engine over well. It's most likely a replacement.

Looks like a CJ-5 starter.
