Eastwoods has a pair of seam seperators that look like a file with one sharp edge. It is made for hammering along a seam and spliting the spot welds... Advert says it is really fast. Has anyone used one of these torture devices, does it work? Does it ruin both edges?
Bottom line: should I save the $30?

Either that or a get a spot weld cutter. There will probably be some spots that you might not be able to swing a hammer in order to use that type though. I used the $5 spot weld cutter from harbor freight for all mine and it worked great. I've cut dozens of welds with it and it's still usable.

Go to the local hardware store and buy the paint scraping tool that has a round side to use to scrape the paint off a roller. They are usually quite thick, and sharpened, and designed to be hit with a hammer. If you do any painting around eh house you may already have one..
Yes, used improperly they will ruin both sides of your seam. You need to do something to make the one side weak, so it breaks off the good part. Either grind partly thru the welds or use a spot weld cutter, or work on something that is really rusty on one side of a seam. You'll be a pro after the first 200 or so spot welds anyhow.

I used the putty knife/scraper a lot on mine and if you have 1 part that is trashed on the seam you are splitting it will break loose pretty quick and leave the better piece not too bad. Path of least resistance it appears. I also used the spot weld tool where I could.

My personal experience, I have a MATCO seam splitter, used by itself will damage, if used with a spotweld cutter, a very valuable combo.
