Title: Willys Axles
Post by: athawk11 on October 29, 2013, 10:38:40 PM
Another Willys curiosity...

I have 2 1949 CJ3As. They both have the Dana 25 and 41 axle combinations. Whitey, the current project, has these perches above the spring mounts on both front and rear axles. ODie the green Willys, does not have them on either axle. I've seen a few axles lately. Most seem to have the perch.

What are they there for? And why don't I have them on ODie?

The perches are where the rubber bump stops hit when the vehicle is bottomed out. Generally CJ-2As have the extra perch and CJ-3As don't. Of course you can't make any generalizations like that because there are always exceptions. I've gotta think they were eliminated to save money. Just like today, saving a few dollars on every vehicle really adds up. Tim, what are the assembly dates and/or ring gear dates on those axles?

Bob,
Ill get the manufacture dates tonight. Not knowing for sure if the axles are original to these Willys, I can offer this;

The 41 and 25 that have the perches are on CJ3A #13655--a fairly early '49 3A.

The 41 and 25 without the perches ore on CJ3A #36662-- a fairly late '49 3A.

Bob,
Dana 25 with Perch...Outside marking is tough to read.  1 24 48... Of course, the last digit is the hardest to make out, so not sure on the '8'.   Same axle...ring gear...  1 12 49E

I can't make out any date markings on the exterior of the  axle with no perch.  Either too many coats of paint or no date marking at all.  I am looking at the raised donut shaped area on the front of the axle.  Is there another place to look without opening up the diff?

The axle assembly date is probably 1 24 49 since it had to be assembled after the ring gear was made on 1 12 49.

At some point they began to put the axle assembly date on the tube instead of on the donut. Try looking at the area inside the circle in this photo...
