Title: Oil Dip Stick..
Post by: 1955CJ-5 on September 19, 2013, 08:44:57 PM: My CJ-5 dipstick has a baffle just over 1/2 way up..I suppose all F and L 134's have the same dipstick.

On the 51 3a the little baffle is gone.....the engine has been rebuilt so it's not in there... :D

But my question is, do I need this baffle and what does it do?

Is it just there to keep the dipstick from vibrating wildly?

The 3a stick has a little tab and a couple of small notches where the baffle used to be....

I guess the engine gets along fine without it....I'll get a picture later...

I need to go through the box of used engine parts that the machinist gave me and see if there is a baffle in there!

But, maybe that is why they stopped putting them on the dipstick...

I'm not sure if it would fall into the sump anyway, as the stick goes through a small hole on it's way to the sump and there is a side passage for the oil...so no gaping hole down there...

Before I put the oil tube/dipstick on the engine I was attaching the oil filter, and sure enough, I dropped a blind nut and it went straight into the hole for the oil tube..... :o.....thankfully it was resting on that casting and did not fall into the pan....!
