Title: Order of disrepair.....
Post by: ZekeD on August 03, 2013, 02:03:07 PM
No this is not a French military honor, but a request for advice on what to start/where to start witththe dissembly of my 49 3a.    Or do you start at the front and keep going forever?    ;D

Thanks

Hmmm....I dont remember where I started on mine, it seem like I started with the front.

All I remember is thinking, I'll take this off to work on it! Then, it was: Since thats out of the way, this other part will come off easy, and so forth and so forth. Then, I realized there was nothing left but a frame and two axles and a BIG pile of parts!!! :o :o (Thats about how it really happened)

Just put ALL of the fasteners and little stuff in baggies, label and place in a box, it makes going together so much easier.

Hope this helps!

Good question, and a tough one to answer....

I guess it depends on how much you plan to do..

If the engine is going in for rebuild, that takes time...mine took several months...

That gives time to work on the other stuff...

It's way easier to get the engine out if the grill, radiator and fenders are off..

Way easier to clean and remove the transmission/transfer if the tub is off...

I kept refusing to admit that my project was turning into a restoration, and kept trying to keep it in the "fix it up and drive" department....

There was a lot of that..."as long as this part is out I might as well take that out too......"

Get a digital camera and take lots of pictures before you start to take things apart...

If you are restoring it and taking the tub off, I would suggest starting with soaking the steering wheel hub with oil.

And not just any oil, ATF, or PB Blaster, or Kroil or liquid wrench..

I started a FAQ post on how to take apart your jeep. If you click the latest posts you should find it. It is a work in progress and may need a few edits but you'll get the basic idea anyhow.  :D

Well it isn't meant to scare you, but I gave up and pulled the shaft out of the box. Then the shaft with the wheel on it sat and got hit occasionally with PB blaster for two years before getting stuck in a press. The shaft popping off the wheel was enough to put a hole in the concrete floor.

Thanks Guys,

The wheel is toast so not a huge problem.  Engine runs great, tranny leaks like a sieve, brakes make you pick up speed :o

Bought a camera just for this project, and a huge supply of baggies ( I got them from the hippy next door... Just used once, but theysmell funny.....not really :D)

For this reason your first thing to do is go to a boat shop and get an anchor  with a rope.  If you need to stop throw it out and hold on to the rope...First tie the rope to the anchor

It has a pto winch on the front, I could shackle the anchor to it and drive backwards.

Pull the cable out, route it under the jeep, and fasten it to the drawbar...that way when you run the winch it will pull on the drawbar and slow you down...
