This just looks like a good place for some sort of support bracket...

Yep, there is a L shaped bracket that goes there. I have one if you need it.

A fellow I know has an M-38. I was looking at it and was so impressed by the coolant drain I took a picture...

And in the process I got a pretty good picture of the starter brace...
